What's the fastest speed you have gone in your car??
Driving 159 mph on a public highway is a dumb idea, even in a supercar like the E55. Have a blowout at that speed, and you're likely to end up in a wad of steel and blood somewhere in the next county. Hit a rock or a piece of 18-wheeler tread, and you might total your lovely car. If the cop thinks you were running from him, he arrests you for evading arrest (a felony in Texas). If he doesn't, he can still arrest you for reckless driving (a misdemeanor). Have an accident that kills someone, and they'll try their best to put you in prison for manslaughter. They may succeed.
-140 mph in a '91 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo
-130 mph in a '94 Ford Mustang GT
-125 mph in a '92 Audi 100S
-123 mph in my very own daily driver Accord with 350K miles (downhill, of course)
-110 mph in a '97 Dodge Ram 2500 V-10
I topped out a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza at a whopping 81 mph.
The fastest I've ever driven a Mercedes is 120 mph, in a 2000 CL500 and a 2002 SLK32 AMG.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
I've gotten two tickets in the past five months--both late at night on the same wide four-lane divided highway. First one was in November--73/55, 2pts. I believe I was accurately clocked. Went to court, pleaded guilty w/explanation, got probation, $100 fine. Second time was the end of March. I was going 60 in a 45. When pulled over, the officer told me she clocked me at 70 (no way, but I didn't argue). She said she'd be 'nice' and write me up for 65/45. That's one point (??). I have not yet settled this ticket. If you have any ideas on how to preserve my driving record since I'm on probation already, let me know. I've almost completely quit speeding at night, not quite during the day. I was extremely polite to both officers, but neither of them let me off easily the way police have let many of my friends off.
Also, how many of you have radar detectors? I'm thinking about getting one (V1 only). It's expensive for me, so I'd like to know if radar detectors are really effective, if one maintains good common sense and vigilance as well.
I've had my '86 BMW 528e (w/225/50VR16 tires) over 100 eleven times in the past year. However, I've only exceeded 100 once since my first ticket (108/65).
Good luck to you all and speed safely!!

Isn't that illegal to be driving when you have 3pts on your record? I thought when you get 3pts your license is revoked and you can't drive for xx amount of months/yrs??
Still, I ought to call the Motor Vehicle Administration to confirm this. I've found a lot of info on the internet referring to the 12-point system. How is it in CA?
If anyone has more definitive information, I'd be happy to hear!
Run into me and I'll make your life miserable. I promise.
As I mentioned, my most recent ticket hasn't even been entered into the court records yet (after three weeks?!), so I haven't settled it. Technically, I'm still on probation with a clean record.
I'd be grateful to hear from any of you regarding two issues:
Do any of you have ideas about what I should do about my most recent ticket (i.e. fight it, plead guilty and try to get the point taken away, or just pay it and get the point, plus the previous two).
Are radar detectors actually helpul and worth it in preventing future tickets? As I said, I hardly speed at night anymore, and if I do it's not by more than 5-10 mph, even in insanely limited zones. How do you all avoid tickets (or do you really actually obey the speed limits?).
I look forward to hearing anything anyone has to say!

P.S. For the record, speed limits are the only traffic laws I break. Two years after receiving my license, I continue to do the two-stop thing at stop signs (come to compete stop at sign or line, then pull forward to where I can see, stop, and check for traffic. Everyone else I know rolls through. In residential areas (25 mph zone or along parked cars), I never exceed 30. I signal religiously, and always wear a seat belt as well as my required corrective lenses. However, I generally tend to be 10-20 mph over the speed limit. I'm not bragging; I just hope everyone sees my driving style in perspective.

When a friend of mine rides with me, he always chides me for not being 'aggressive' enough--for example when making a left turn onto a busy road, he wants me to ease out and block the street with my car to force some of the traffic to stop. Yet when we come upon another driver in the middle of the road, he gets mad and comments, "Look at this idiot!". Apparently, what's OK for me to do is not OK for someone else.
Tailgating is another example--when someone does it to you, they're a terrible driver, but when you're following someone else too closely, it's justified because they're driving way too slow, etc.
When you're going 142 mph, everyone else is a slow driver
He's the idiot for trying to merge onto the freeway? Who was the one going 142 mph?
