Just had mine installed following all of the instructions. It was a synch and took less than an hour. My rear has a completely different look, if you know what I mean.

thanks for the demo. Next upgrade will be the chrome indoor inserts.

IV,

I'm sure it's in this thread somewhere - what is the part # for the stainless rear bumper plate?

Here is the finished product.

I also installed the chrome door inserts.

I cleansed the area with the alcohol pad provided, created a dog ear tag from the sticky tap, positioned the door insert and when it was to my liking, I pulled of the tape and secured it. It took less than 20 minutes to complete the whole task.

Enjoy the pictures.

I finally decided I liked the chrome (stainless steel) bumper plate enough to buy one and replace the black plastic one with it. I hope to match up as many of the tabs with the existing holes in the bumper. I am aware from the many posts that some of the tabs or pins will have to be removed. I spoke with a contact at the local Mercedes body shop (very knowledgeable) who is willing to help and he suggests I use their eurothane adhesive instead of the 3M double sided tape. The adhesive is suppose to be the same or very similar to what is used to bond the windshield to the frame of the vehicle. He, as well as a co-worker seem to have more confidence in this instead of the tape.

Anyone here have any thoughts on this method of installation? BTW, I am in a hot climate (Texas) during many months of the summer, if that has a bearing on the method of choice. Thanks in advance for any input you can give.

My only issue is that the curvature of the plate doesn't seem to exactly match the curvature of the bumper. Therefore, my plate is a little looser than I would like. It fits snugly on the right side but there is about a 1/8' gap on the left side. This seems to seperate the tape from the bumper somewhat. Although the bumper itself is somewhat flexible if you push on it, I was hoping for a much tighter fit.

I have come to the conclusion that the plate is merely cosmetic and serves no real purpose, other than for looks. I may try to re-install it with some clamps to hold it in place, when it warms up a little. The eurothane adhesive sounds like a viable choice to try.

Thanks for the note, scotty. When you installed yours, did you leave as many tabs as possible, and only used tape for the curvature, or did you remove all tabs and pins, and load it up with tape? Also, the chrome plate is evidently standard on the 550. I wonder if the 550 bumper is the same as the ther models, or if it is slightly different, which I would doubt. If different, that may explain why it's not snug everywhere on your vehicle.

I left all the tabs in place, only removing the pins. I didn't want to try to drill holes in the bumper for the pins. The tabs all seemed to line up with the slots. I think the bumpers are the same and the fit is just due to manufacturing tolerances. You really wouldn't notice the 1/8" gap unless you knew to look for it.

A large screwdriver, brut force, and a lot of resolve and trust in what you have read.

My only suggestion is that you don't place the adhesive the full length of the chrome strip. I think it cuased mine to not fit the curvature of the bumper as well. I am about to re-do mine, and I will only use the adhesive on the outside 1/2 of each side of the chrome strip, with nothing on the center portion.

At one time, I thought I was going to use either the tape or a mastic product, but I decided against both. I got such a tight fit with the tabs fitting into square/rectangle holes that I decided to leave it alone. It sure doesn't feel like its going anywhere. I check it often, especially when I wash the vehicle, and feels really secure. Eventually, I may have to use the tape or mastic, but for now, I'm leaving it alone.

Yes, it's the same thing. It comes standard, only on the 550. The 450 and 320 CDI comes with a black (charcoal) plastic bumper plate that some of us are switching out in favor of the chrome.

Formymercedes.com has the chrome bumper plate for $195, which is reasonable. I have a Black 08 GL450 and I would love to have this chrome bumper plate on it. But I'm not the handiest of people and I would rather have a professional/body shop do it for me. I just moved here to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area recently, anybody know or can recommend a reliable body shop in the area that can install the bumper plate for me? Or can a MB dealer do it also?

I have a GL 320. It has the black plastic piece on top of the bumper. Did yours have this or was nothing there? The crappy black plastic piece does nothing to protect the edge of the bumper. I scratched the edge of the bumper the second week.
I just dont know if I remove the plastic piece if there are holes under it. If so, will the metal piece cover them?
