Not a Porsche, a 645 cab. I thought you might have seen a reflection of it in my bumper plate install photos. Never mind.

Looks Nice

That looks nice 2thfixr.
I have that in my 420CDI from the factory as part of a package. My experience is this. While reversing a hit a signal post, making a little dent on my two crome plates, lower and upper, and not damaging the rear bumper. The lower one I was able to replace it my self. The upper one was replaced by my MB dealer, because as they explained to me the rear bumper was removed in order to instal the upper chrome plate. Without that it was not possible to make the replacement as it should be. They charged me one hour of labor. Not bad.
Anyway they look great and protect the rear bumper.

Boxboss ..Thanks for the detailed instructions and photos. With this as a guide I'm going to try the Stainless Bumper Plate install myself.

These forums are a great resource!

You're welcome and I know you will have success. Post pictures after your install. The stainless plate does look great.

Good info! We had purchased a bumper plate for our ML. Looked like too much trouble to install on our own so we returned it. This sounds like a solution.

Hey All, I was checking various online sites for a few parts and on MercedesPartsSuperstore.com, you can get the stainless steel bumper plate even cheaper than at the MB of Eugene site ($169.50). The price at this site is $154.95 and is listed under the same OEM part # 1648800211.

Kudos & Thanks - the instructions worked ! + my experience

I know this thread started way back in 2007 but I finally got my GL450 (2008) this March.

The black step pad became a grey ugly item after 2 months (and after me developing envy of other other GL450 with chrome step pads).

I ordered from oediscountparts.com @ $258 + FREE shipping (i do not work for them) as well as the chrome door handle cups.

My updates to the instructions (2008 GL 450) - the only pins I needed to cut off were 2. They were on the lip of the chrome step pad since there were no matching holes for them on the bumper. The main flat area of the step pad had pins which did not require cutting off. (I suppose if was factory installed, there would have be a nut or butterfly nut under the bumper).

No I did not do any double-sided tape (none came with it anyway).

(My chrome door handle cups did, though).

Everything looks solid. No more envy but pride as befitting a SUV of this class (+ saving $100+ doing it myself ! ).

Thanks to boxboss !

What is the part number for the chrome plate (rear bumper) that you ordered, I tried that site, but can't find the chrome one. They keep pointing me to the cheap plastic one. Thanks

Actually I just put mine on a few days ago. I found this guy in another thread about the split-folding cargo cover. Its actually a Jeep dealership I think and it looks like he can get any accessories you want. I just ordered the chrome roof rack, cargo cover and the bumper plate. Good prices and he was really easy to deal with.

KENZIEBOLD@coppusmotors.com

I'll be using him for any future parts/accessories purchases.

That chrome plate IS plastic (part nbr part number 164-880-02-11). So are the chrome door cups.

Yes, mentally we think chrome == metal, but sadly even chrome faucets and door handles are plastic ! Chrome is just the coating - technically speaking. Good luck !

Thats the part number I ordered from coppusmotors.

Its NOT a plastic part. All metal except a plastic piece on the underside which has the clips/pegs on it to snap onto your bumper.
