Depends where I'm going.
Stainless bumper plate is on!

I'm not sure if it's too much though because my PE already has the polished stainless steel below the bumper and the chrome roof racks/crossbars. What do you guys think, better with or without?

I love the way these things look. I put mine on last weekend. Adds a bit to an already great looking car not to mention the protection factor. Leave it on.............

I vote to leave it on Why because I just got mine put on yesterday with L8Apex's help. IMO, it just gives that extra oomph but is not very loud. And, I don't have to worry about my kids and parents dragging their stuff out the back now

I think the front is a bit over 400 and the rear is 200 and change...not installed from the dealer parts dept.

It looks ok, like any other stainless add-on. Kind of like a stainless gas cap. The underplate looks more like a factory engineered piece, which it is.

I think it looks great. How difficult is it to install? My husband is pretty handy -- is it something a person with a garage full of tools could handle?

I had some great help to install mine so I am not the best one to answer this but if you find the original thread by L8Apex, it definitely seems possible. Others have done it and posted their success.

Has Anybody tried installing this stainless steel plate on a 2008 GL450? I wonder if the clips that seem to come with the plate attach to the existing holes in the bumper?

Boxboss did it and posted some great detailed step by step instructions. It is around here somewhere.

Looks very nice - I've got a dark grey plastic piece on the bumper of my 08 GL450 and do not like it. Dealer told me it could not be replaced with the chrome.. sounds like that is untrue.

I treat Dealers and my 5 (almost) year old in the same way. You have to know what questions to ask to get the right answer. Else it's a lot of "tail chasing".

It looks like blittle was the first one to take his black bumper pad off and replace with Chrome one. I know Boxboss did it too but can't find his post. Here is a link to blittle's post that proves dealers say untrue things

Dealer strikes again! It is totally untrue as I did it and so did BLittle.

BLittle had already removed the clips from his chrome one so had to use the 100% tape install. I had not and was able to use the chrome one as is. The clips do install in the holes on the bumper left when the dark grey one comes off.

I'll find my OP with directions and link to it in a bit.

Here's my OP on installing the chrome bumper plate using the "L" clips that come attached to the chrome one.

Install Chrome Bumper Plate

The part number is 164-880-02-11. My dealer matched MB of Eugene, Oregon's online price of $169.50 (+ tax.)

I have read your OP and you did a great job with it. Do you think it would be possible to drill holes in the bumper for the studs on the curved part or would it be too much trouble?

I am about to order the part myself.

I would not even attempt it. First, you would have to drill the holes perfectly to get an alignment. Second, the only reason to do so would be to affix some "thin metal nuts" to the ends of the pins once they were through the bumper. I doubt if it's possible to reach those pins unless you removed the bumper.

Seriously, it took me about 10 minutes to clip off those pins, file a bit then sand smooth.

Thanks. I believe I will stick with your procedure.
