On Saturday, I got a medium-sized box from MBUSA thanking me for driving an MB. Inside was a leather cardholder wallet with the logo on it and my "personalize" Auto card (all pertinent info and #'s).

While this gift was nice, as much as these things cost we should get a sterling silver Tiffany's key ring!!!

Manufacturer freebies

I have a 645 convertible as well but was not able to find time to take advantage of the Spartanburg trip. But BMW did send me a killer tin of chocolate chip cookies...

I wonder how long it will be before I get my present from MBUSA? I have had my GL 320 for two weeks now....

OT(and not MB) oinick - Sharkfest (too late to register) is in Asheville starting a week from Friday. Several of us 6er owners are doing a day at the Tail of the Dragon Thursday before. I'll be going through Chattanooga on the way up Wednesday. How about taking the day off and joining us?

I got a keyring (actually quite nice) from my Service Advisor. ALso the dealership that sold me the car sent me a different keychain. Also very nice.

MBUSA sent me the wallet.

I actually use the 2 keychains for the car keys (2 sets)

The wallet I leave in the car. Its empty.

I bought my GL450 going through my credit union; got it for $6K below MSRP, so I'm not expecting anything from MB.

When we bought our Honda Civic DX, we got a very nice front door welcome mat with our last name initial on it from the Honda dealer. Gee, wonder what we would have got if we had bought a nice car!

With that kind of discount you should be sending MB a gift...:-)

$6K below MSRP comes out somewhere around $1000-2000 below invoice...even for a credit union buy that is an amazing deal.

I checked around through a couple of auto buying services (CostCo & Auto Club) and when I told them the price I had through the credit union, both sales people I talked to advised me to go with that price, as there was no way they could touch it. Carsdirect.com came close with their pricing but I had bought my Expedition through the credit union and it was a great experience, so I went back to them.

I used Carsdirect pricing as my counter offer. Got close to $7.5K off MSRP. And, MB has sent me 2 gifts so far MBUSA screwup as usual, eh??

Newbie - it does take a while to get the wallet (as mentioned previously). Mine came almost 2 months after.

Did you buy off the lot oknish or order? Off the lot I can see a large discount but that much below invoice is some kind of discount. I don't have the detailed figures but $7.5K is about 10% off or 3% below invoice on a $72K car. I know you really worked the dealers against each other and perhaps that is the reason you did so well. The GL is not another R class lot queen and I am just trying to understand why such discounts exist on this SUV.

My discount on the diesel is also large but the circumstances are different since a special relationship exists with the dealership.

I did buy off the lot. Since my old car got stolen, I didn't have the luxury to order. I did have to play dealers but it helps that there are so many MB dealers in LA including #1 and #2 in the nation. I bought in Dec, a week before Christmas and that is a slow time for car sales around here. Every dealership I walked into said we will make a deal and match/beat anyone else's prices.

I think I got a good deal also because I was looking for a loaded one and there is more wiggle room on options for dealers. Another unconfirmed factor is that more "trunk money" was flowing to dealers in Dec. MBUSA had some crazy lease and finance deals going on at that time.

I probably lucked out and bought at the right time since my dealer is now offering to buy it off me for 1K less than what I paid them. Now the demand is there and so discounts are scarce. I am going to see if I can work a deal on 550
