deflector for GL

Anyone know of a company that sells a bug and/or a roof deflector for the GL?

Thanks. Mel

If not, is there a universal bug deflector that will fit.

Hey guys, I may have a lead on one. I had similar problems finding one for my new ML!

Anyhow, I will look into it and report back next week!

why not just get the 3m or other brand clear wrap? You can get the front end and partial or full hood wrapped.

I've seen MLs w/ a deflector. I don't like the look personally.

First time I have heard of this wrap. Any more details?? How does it work? How heat resistant this is? Any paint damage when peeled off?

Sounds interesting.

Similar to window tint in application. A local shop quoted Llumar brand which he says is the best and won't turn yellow. They make it for the whole front end, mirrors, and between the windshield and sunroof. It's 2K for the whole kit and application, which he says will take an entire day. I'm gonna set up an appointment sometime in the next week or so. Is there anyone out there that already has it on the GL.

$2K? Ouch! That's definitely more expensive than it should be by at least $500, unless they are doing your back bumper as well.

From what I've researched, the 3M and Ventureshield brands are the best ones. Both have UV inhibitors to HELP to prevent yellowing.

I struggled with this choice myself, however, the problem with any sort of clear bra is that while it protects against paint chips, it doesn't actually prevent dents from larger pieces or debris, nor does it help to protect the windshield. Plus, keep in mind that the film doesn't last forever...you're looking at a max lifetime of 5 years, depending on how much sun exposure your vehicle gets.

It does seem like you could have it repainted in 4-5 years for that amount. Maybe with better results. So I shouldn't be afraid of 3M? If I go through with this.

3M Clear protectant

I had the dealer put the 3M clear wrap on my GL prior to delivery. They charged me $1100.00 for the complete front end including the driving lights, (headlights weren't done, as I suspect the Zenons give off too much heat). They went up about 18" on the hood, did the mirrors and a small patch on the quarter panel just behind the 2nd row doors.

I had this done to my 2000 540i as well and after 7 years have had no signs of deterioration.

I wouldn't be without it

Actually the HID Xenon headlamps give off less heat than halogens. You could probably get the headlamps done at any point. One of the places here charges $99 for it (includes labour).

1100 sounds more like it. I already have three rock chips in the same area below the emblem on the hood. Dealer sent touchup paint. Said to apply then wax. Wasn't pleased with the results, so I just left the other two alone. Anyone else have better results?

While I'm not going to have my GL450 until later this week (hopefully ) one thing that I want to mention is the fact that with the "clear bras" installation is everything. If you don't have a good installer, you're not going to have a quality product. Look around and request to see various samples of your installer's work for installation is far more important than the film (if a quality product is used) and remember, while price is no guarantee of a quality installation, there's something very fishy about the cheap installations that should scream "buyer beware!"

As an alternative to the films, I use Rejex coating on the nose and wheels. A few coats and it will give good protection against sand and small debris, not as good as the films but still a lot better than nothing. Brake dust comes off easier too. Cheap and easy. Films are great but $$$$$ and it's all about the installer.

I've heard a lot about Rejex on some detailing forums so I decided to get it a try. I put it on my Monoblock E's yesterday. Much easier to apply when the wheels are in a box rather than on a car!

From the detailing forum, a very informative post about wraps ("Clear Bras"), installation, and results: Paint Protection Films

FYI - My dealership charged $900 if I installed before I took delivery. Looks like I got a good deal.
