Luggage Roof Carrier

I need a large enclosed luggage carrier for my GL 320. Anyone know the best quality product and largest for the GL 320? Would that also fit the R 500?

Have you ruled out the large MB roof carrier, and if so what made you do ... so?

Considering the MB one, but I assumes a 3rd party mfg would ghave a better quality product and also less expensive.

If you do find that to be so, please let me know. Perhaps you can find who supplies the unit for MB. I haven't seen a roof container yet, but I don't know why you'd think that someone would provide a better quality product for your MB than MB, and if so why'd you buy an MB to start with?

Talking

Here's my MB large cargo carrier on my GL and trailer.
I used it driving x-country (3k miles: NJ to CA) and it was very quiet.
I taped the exposed rails with duct tape and it really helped stop the whistling noise from the wind.

Regards,
Mel

Is that large enoiugh to carry many suitcases? Do you know if that would be the same rack as a R Class? I want to swap the racks between my GL and R.

Mel - good to see you post. How was the trek? You still in CA or back in NJ?

And, yes, where is the trailer?

Cool

Jen/Oknish, looks like I will be staying in SoCal for good. I must say that I am enjoying the weather and everything else that this region has to offer.
I'm going to have CEC install my 22's again this week. My GL pulled the trailer weighing in at almost 4,000 lbs at speeds of up to 85mph with a mpg reading of 14 (flat roads) to 11.8mpg (continental divide) with 3 adults, dog, and baby along with the rooftop carrier and the trailer for 3,000 miles in 6 days. I was very impressed with the GL's ability to pass uphill. I felt that I had a lot of usable torque when I needed it. For now, I will be using the trailer as a portable garage/storage unit.

Just had the A-service and full detail done at Beverly Hills MB and everything checked out ok and is good as new. I did suffer a major chip that turned into a crack when a semi decided to fling a huge rock at my windshield. I am having it replaced through my insurance. Other than that, I was very happy with the trip and the GL's performance. Will post more pics when I get settled in.

Regards,
mel

I was able to fit an extra large rolling Samsonite duffle bag along with 2 medium suitcases and 2 carry-on luggages with room to spare for shopping bags along the way. The cabin was clutter free since I wanted to keep the dog happy with plenty of room behind the 2nd row seats.

The carrier was easy to load/unload thanks to the side steps. The MB carrier should be interchangeable with the R and GL class. It comes with 2 different rail attachments depending on which MB roof rack you have, making it universal amongst the MB line of roof racks.

Regards,
Mel

Welcome to SoCal! You picked about the hottest time to come out here, but the beach region is usually much cooler than where I'm at (near Palmdale). Feel free to ask about places to go, eat, etc. as I'm a native of SoCal.

Welcome to SoCal, Mel. I am not a native but, please, feel free to ask and I will do my best to help.

Methinks we should get together sometime and take some pics of the GLs.

MB products are made by Thule...even the basic carrier bars. So, i guess thule would work and you could save $50.

Thanks for the warm SoCal welcome everyone. I am in W. Hollywood and love it here. My family has already adjusted to the area. It feels like home.

I agree, a GL meet/photo shoot is a must.

I am close to Mulholland and Laurel Cyn and would love to know where the fireworks will be on July 4th.

Regards,
Mel

Hollywood Bowl!! Don't know if you can get in the vicinity to see them, but if you can, they are awesome.

Here's a link to the top 18 shows in the L.A. area http://losangeles.about.com/od/every...orksla05_5.htm

We definitely need to get a SoCal GL get-together and photo opp going.

I am in TN this week meeting Boss for some ribs, in case you haven't heard.

Mel/Jen - Hope you guys get together for the 4th and let's plan a get-together when I am back as well. I think a pic of a silver GL with a blue on one side and black on another would look great.

Anyone else around LA area who wants to get toegther?

Have a safe and happy 4th everyone.

Sounds like a plan....have some ribs for me. The best rib joint that I have found so far is Zeke's Smokehouse in W.Hollywood.

I had CEC put my wheels back on yesturday...can't beleive I have been without them since November of last year. Ready and waiting for photo shoot.

Happy 4th!

The Bear Pit in Mission Hills (San Fernando Valley) is pretty good. Hutch's BBQ in Pasadena was a favorite of mine growing up. We used to go there on special occasions. I think it's still there on Walnut St.
