My understanding is that M-B Blue tinted glass is indeed I.R reflecting , not the same as "I.R. Glass", but more than the standard "Green" glass.

2/3 of the car (including front and rear sunroof) are covered with privacy glass. The other 1/3 is Blue-Tinted Glass. This, coupled with 3-Zone Climate control, should meet most owner needs for HVAC efficiency.

My guess is that I.R. Glass would be standard on the GL550 w/ '09.

Isn't I.R. glass a misnomer? From what I have seen and understand, IR protection is provided by a film on top of regular glass. So the glass itself is not IR resistant but the film helps it resist IR. Roll down the front window in a 3 zone equipped GL and you can see the edge of the film at top of the window just like a tint film.

Wonder if I can buy that IR film after market.

The reason I raise this question is that my S Class has laminated glass which is IR resistant and also provides insulation from noise. The description for the 2007 GL 3 Zone Option describes it so:

2007 Options
3-Zone Climate Control
This option provides separate temperature controls for the driver and front passenger, as well as for second-row passengers. Rear blower and six vents are also included. Infrared glass helps reflect sunlight and reduce interior heat.

So I am still not clear on whether the "Blue" glass is laminated and whether it is more than just a blue tint. Would they use a different glass just for the windshield, driver and passenger sides and a different one for the privacy windows?

Can you clarify what you mean by "door panel". Just trying to understand is all.

The 550 sounds great, but I'm still glad I got the 07 450 with all the bells and whistles INCLUDING the off-road capability. There are going to be a few of us out there who want/need ( I'm in the need) that and I am amazed that MB won't make that an option on their top model.........maybe in another model year or two.

I think the interior of 550 will be same as 450. I, personally, love the way the insider of the door looks with leather on top and a hard material at the bottom. I can see why it would like rubber to some but, trust me, touch it and you will realize it's not.
