Aux Input

I have a '08 GL 350CDI on order and was curious on where the Aux Input is located in the glove box. Also, does it do an adequate job with the iPod?

My 2006 E500 has the jack in lower left of glove box. My GL does not have a jack because it has the RSE package. RSE plays through AUX in the Command system. In non RSE cars, the jack plays through AUX. I think my Ipod sounds fine in the E500.

I think iPod kit takes up the AUX input in glove compartment and not the RSE.

I don't know how the i-pod kit is wired into the command system. In the 2007 GL with RSE the jack in the glove compartment is deleted. When you hit AUX in audio mode the RSE plays through the car speakers. I don't have an Ipod kit in my E, I just plug it into the jack in the glove box select AUX in audio.

I assume you are not getting the iPod integration?

Yes, that is the case. Will I be disappointed with the performance and have to install it after the fact?

I have the RSE also and just use a good FM transmitter that's made to sit in one of the cup holders. Works great for me in my area with no interference. Cord goes right to the power tap in the passenger footwell so you don't see it at all. Keeps the iPod charged too.

I don't know if the integration kit can be installed after the fact. :dunno:

Honestly, I don't know if you will be disappointed. I haven't heard an MP3 player through the Aux input - I can say I am not disappointed with the factory integration kit. EXCEPT - why doesn't the song/artist/album show on the Command screen???

The MP3 function or the iPod cable overrides the AUX setting for the rear DVD player. If you have anything plugged into the iPod cable, the audio from the DVD will not play over the speakers. You just have to unplug the MP3 or iPod and it will play the movie audio for you.

The sound of the iPod/MP3 is not as good as a CD or satellite radio. It is adequate, however, especially with the Logic 7 system.

I agree that it is disappointing that the info about the song playing from your iPod only shows up in the MFD between the tach and the speedometer. I do not know if it works the same way for a generic MP3 player.

The iPod integration kit can absolutely be installed at the dealer and it will work with the RSE system. Just remember to unplug it to get the rear audio to play.

And what is a GL "350"? Is that a new model, or did you mean to say "320"?

Seriously, bro, try an iPod once and you won't go back to CDs. IMO, it's a lot more convenient especially if you like to take your music with you. So, for example, when hitting the gym just park the car and take the iPod with you. Ditto for work.

And, if you 6/7 CDs with 100 songs each, you can get by with a 30/40 GB iPod (proably an overkill) which will run you around 200 bucks but is really worth it.
