Service A and Service B costs
Over on the S Class forum, I saw that NJ had his S Class service A done for only $193.
Has anyone had their GL serviced for A and/or B yet? If so, what was the cost?

I've had Service A done, and it was ... uh ... $84.22 for parts, $140.40 for labor, and $11.23 for repair orders. (What the heck is that?) Total of $235.85 plus $7.73 in tax, so $243.58. Each shop will be different and a Service A for one car won't be the Service A for another.

Isn't service A basically a "look at and check" with an oil& filter change the only real "work?"

I think the B Service on the S run almost $400 + whatever they can find to run up the tab....

Svc A: $199
Svc B: $399 my first svc on my GL was svc B. don't know why. SVC Rep. told me it depends on driving habit.

Sounds like your SVC Rep had some "hidden value." My first service on the S was at 12,000 miles and indicated A. I can't imagine why the first service on the GL would be a B. May be a difference but I doubt it.

If that's true then I guess Bimmers are a true bargain.. Haven't had to pay service even a dime for either one of my Bimmers... That's real savings.. They even supply wiper blades.. Oh well, bet Bentleys don't get included service either.. Fancy costs!

I agree that inclusion 4 years of free maitenance is a key benefit of BMW ownership - particularly if you will rack up 50,000 miles in 4 years or less. For someone putting 6000 miles per year on a car it isn't worth that much. Having switched from 3 new BMW' s in 5 years to 2 new MB's in the past two, I miss the handling more than the maintenance. If BMW didn't go off on overwrought, overdone styling binge (IMO) under Bangle I probably would have not made the switch. Having made the switch, I have become a more conservative driver - which for me, has been a good thing and I have gotten accustomed to the more comfortable ride.

I would agree that the inclusion of "free" maintenance is a key benefit and I would love to see MB return to including it. My point was it is not "free." Somewhere in the price you pay for a BMW is a figure to cover maintenance cost. BMW is using this to the maximum in current commercials which is well done.

Let's beat this dead horse some more.. If S classes had included maintainence (which would be great at average 90-100K) then they could sell even more of them and have even more satisfed customers.. They do this for 7 series at 10-15K less out the dealer lot and they should advertise this obvious benefit...
I for one did not even consider the maintenance costs on the S and I certainly would not buy a 7 series just to get "free" maintenance. In fact I wouldn't buy a 7 series if they were $50K less than an S Class....just my opinion, YMMV.

Why do you think MB stopped "free" service...because the make more money by charging for it as it is needed. It they thought that they were losing sales on the S Class because of a "free" oil change they would re-instate the policy.

Try an S Class with ABC and Dynamic Seats at 75 mph on a tight turn in the Utah and Colorado mountains on it's maiden voyage and see what you think of the 7er after that ride. If you think the S550 is a "cold fish" you are missing something. Give yourself a treat...take one for a test drive...:-)

Most of us drive at no more the 6/10's of a car's capability virtually all of the time. Drive a BMW and a MB back to back at 8/10's or 9/10's at a track and most people would pick the BMW regardless of price or free maintenance. However, IMO most drivers would prefer the feel of the MB most of the time, BMW's track perfomance comes at fairly high price in terms of comfort. BMW marketing does a great job of exploiting their performance image and choosing a MB over a comparable BMW requires a bit of realism and maturity.

I put a post about included maintenance over on the thread about whether to get your oil changed between indicated services. It is long and I will not repeat here, but I do not think when you are buying an expensive car that getting "free" (really "prepaid") maintenance should be a big deal. It is a marketing gimmick that BMW uses to gin up sales, and it works. Obviously, they make more money by offering it than by not. Please look over at the other thread for why I feel that way if you're interested.
