Train Delivery Time From Alabama

Does anyone have a good guess on how long it takes to get a new GL to the west coast once it gets on the train in Alabama?

Our salesman at the dealership is not real computer savvy. We finally got a hold of somebody at the dealership who looked it up on netstar and said our GL550 was put on a train bound for the Bay Area on October 11. From there, I understand they have to wait until they get a truckload to ship it to Reno. This could take several days after it gets off the train.

If I add the "several days" for the truck ride to the train ride time, I should get a good idea of when I'll see the vehicle. I just can't figure out how long the train takes.

I was told this weekend that it is about a 10-15 day delivery to SoCal. I'm not sure what portion of that is train vs. truck. My dealer did not seem to have this pinned down very well but he did seem honest in his expectation of a delivery date. We will see.

That is the standard pat answer they give. My dealer told me the same thing here in Colorado.

NJ probably has the absolute best idea how long it should take.

My wife’s GL was built on September 25 and was delivered to the dealer in San Diego on October 10 which works out to be 15 days from manufacture to on the lot. We picked the car up two days later due to scheduling problems but it was well worth the wait!

OK Puggy. No more posts without first showing everyone pics of the new family member. Okay?

Congratulations! You ought to bring it out to the Vegas event next weekend. We don't have a Pewter GL in attendance yet. There's a convoy heading East from So. Cal on Friday you could join. What you say Nish and Newbie_2_MB... could Puggy pull his 550 in behind your 450's?

I posted pictures in another thread but don't mind posting them again. My wife has never gotten excited about a new car but the GL has been different. First impressions are it’s a marvelous vehicle and to date has not disappointed.

We can’t make the Las Vegas meet as we have a pretty busy schedule between now and the Christmas holidays. I have less free time since retirement than when I was gainfully employed.

Sorry Puggy... that was my miss completely. I totally forgot you had posted them already. BTW... beautiful color combination. I really like it alot!

Now... stop scaring me about retirement. If my life were to get any busier in retirement than what I'm already experiencing, I don't want to retire.

Thanks for the update on delivery time to San Diego and you pics look great. I agree with you about retirement. I retired 4 years ago, had kids, and now I am busier than I have ever been

I think 15 days would be an optimum guess on how long from Vance to the West Coast. Mine and Stumblefoot's got delayed before the train got to Chicago. Add a day or so I guess for your extra trucking distance. It's a guessing game and your mileage may vary...:-)

Thanks for the input, guys. From what you're telling me, if the car was put on the train on Oct. 11, I might see the GL on Friday, Oct. 26. That's the date that Dodson and I are driving to Vegas for the GL meet. Looks like we'll have to make the trip in another (and lesser) vehicle.

WordSmith... any updates on your train for you and Dodson? I heard Greg was in Greece this week, so don't know if you were able to get ahold of him and find out how to educate your dealer on Champion Transportation.

Hoping to see those new 550's on Friday!

Just picked up the Black GL550. With any luck, we might also get the Silver one before we leave Friday Morning.

THAT'S AWESOME

I guess we can officially say...

Dinner at Rao's Friday night will be so much sweeter now. Hopefully, that Silver one will come in before you leave.

See you in Vegas!

Geez, Brian, you happy or what?

Jokes aside, great news, WS. See you and your 550 in a couple of days.

How long from order to delivery total, and how long long for the build date to delivery.

Yeah, we're pretty happy. This is Dodson's GL, so he's climbing the walls.

I did notice one flaw: We took the GL out for a test drive; in fact, this was the first time we had actually seen a GL550 in person. Did I mention that Reno is a little behind the times? Anyway, I was behind the wheel, and still a little miffed that Dodson (my son) took delivery before me.

We were out on the freeway and I got the GL up to speed (no more than 55 mph, of course). At that [point, I looked over at Dodson, laughed maniacally, reached over and deftly pushed the EJECT button on the dash.

Instead of the roof panel sliding back and the passenger seat shooting up through the roof (ala James Bond), all that happened was the Command screen folded forward and the CD popped out of the dash.

Maybe the dealer can fix this. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Yeah. Maybe we will get it tomorrow or Friday morning before we leave. The dealer said that as of Tuesday the Silver GL had been off-loaded from the train and was sitting in the "VPC" area, whatever that is. Probably means somethin’ like Very Important Person area; probably a special place for vehicles of dignitaries, foreign leaders, and A-list celebrities. Dealer said it might sit there until they had a full truck-load of cars to deliver.

So, we’ve got that goin’ for us.

Look a little closer behind that command screen. That's where you will find the secondary eject button that launches the passenger seat into the stratosphere.

Sorry guys, no pictures. I have a magazine that I have to get out so that we can go to Vegas. It's Black. Envision it now… all dark and shiny (no dust) with chrome hood fins and kick-*** AMG pedals.

Oh yes, it is awesome.
