Fender Flares for the GL

Has anyone put a fender flares on the GL 320 and 450? I have asked the parts department and was told it would cost about $1300 for the parts itself plus painting and installation. He did a good job of looking for the parts. It is listed as AMG Kit ( fender flares) and has to price each part. He gave a printout of the parts for future reference when I am ready to do it.

$1,300 a fender or total? Wonder what paint/install would cost? About double that? So if you add the fenders, the extra chrome parts (front grill, side window s, roof rails, etc. what are you looking at to make it look like the 550? $5K? I suppose next we get into the AMG badging that everyone had pretty strong opinions on?? A diesel with AMG badging - that'll get the board excited!

Remember that if you put the fender flares you'll have to upgrade your wheels as well. The 550 uses 295 tires to fill the flares, if you use the stock wheels it will look unbalanced.

I replaced the 21" wheels with 19" wheels on a GL550 this fall, to see how it would look...awful!
There is so much space between the tire and the wheel well (with flares) that it looked silly. And that's without jacking-up the air suspension.
This is why MB puts the fender flares and 21" rims in one code (777).

Side note: the fender flares were not developed for looks. They were developed exclusively for the AMG 21" rims. At 10.5 the tires extend just slightly outside the wheel well, which is illegal. The fender flares fix this.

The flares may not have been developed for looks but they sure do enhance the stance of the GL550. You won't find a much better looking large SUV on road today including the new Toyota LX570 (oops...:-) Love this shot showing the flares...
