Smoke on cold starts

Very weird, I have a 07 GL 450 with 4k on the clock. For some reason she smokes on occasion. It only happens on cold starts and lasts for less than 10 sec. It's bin happening since I purchased the car new. Just wondering if this is normal. Had it checked out twice at the dealer and they gave it a clean bill of health. It pisses me off to see a 70k car smoke like my 20 year old Porsche race car. Is there some kind of oil injector to protect the cylinders on start up? Or should I choke the service manager at MB.

It's quite a bit. It could go for days without seeing any smoke at startup. Than all of a sudden smoke. I smelled the smoke an it seems to be a fuel smell combined with burnt oil. It is sickening because it doesn't do it all the time. My original feeling is that it's a leaky injector. It's not happening frequently enough to diagnos properly.

Does it smoke or are you seeing water vapor that has condensated inside of the exhaust. It has a tendency to create a dirty steam and is burned off from the heat of the exhaust right after start.

I'am with BlownV8. Did you have your car washed recently because if you look at the rear exhaust you'll notice that it slants down at approx. 45 degrees and moisture is easily trapped down there, most typically after a car wash for instance.

I've also noticed a very brief high pitch grinding sound on a cold start right before engine turns over (defining cold as in 20-30 degree temperatures and starting engine after 10+ hours after having shut it off). Sounds odd. Normal?

I get the same noise in extreme cold temperature> Sounds like an electric buzzer, but the engine turns over and starts.

I get that same noise. It worried me in the beginning but like the others said, seems to be fine. The smoke is troubling, especially for a non-diesel. Is the smoke white? Are you certain it has a strong odor. I would try to pinpoint when it happens to see if the car was wet, etc.

I agree with BlownV8 and lwain as well. I have been noticing a lot of that recently since it has been cold in SoCal.

Me too. The smoke seems to be related to the high pitch sound at startup. It doesn't always happen even with the sound. Next time have someone stand behind the car to see if there is any smoke. Sounds like the rings on the pistons are seizing against the block and then breaking free or getting oil. Maybe they built these motors with very low tolerances.

I can totally get the feeling you are having about the smoke. I had an S 550, which I just sold, that would spew out a cloud of smoke. It happened a total of about 5 times in 1.5 years that I had the car. It was pathetic. They couldnt find the problem, and the dealer reckoned no one else complained.

The car was perfect though. But the quantity of smoke was just too much to go unnoticed. It would fill up the garage with blueish grey smoke.

Anyway its interesting to notice its happening on a GL

Is it white smoke that's sort of hard to see through, or kind of greyish steamy looking smoke?

My car burnt 1 quart of oil in the first 4000 miles. I recently changed oil and haven't seen any smoke since the switch to mobile 0-40. Ill keep everybody informed if the smoke returns.

On the way to my office this morning, after 2-3 miles of driving, I noticed a bluish-grey smoke for about a mile, and then it stopped. I did wash the garage kept GL late Sunday PM, & immediately put it to bed. First time the GL belched an exhaust cloud in 1,200 miles.

Water in the exhaust pipe reacting to the heat, bad injector, LSD diesel (labeled as LSD), something else?

If there is no oil consuption and makes a lot of smoke once in a while it's the partices filter regenerating it self.......ans smells bad also. Not to worry. White smoke....could weather, water in the exaust, condensation. Not to worry also. Blue smoke... pay attention to the engine oil deep stick. Check it clousely.

With the winter temperatures setting in, the cold start high pitched grinding sound is back. Brief noise on ignition when engine turns over. Then everything runs fine. No smoke. Did anyone ever figure out whether noise if "normal"?

If it's diesel smoke, you can smell it.

As you know, there's normally no diesel smell from exhaust.

Startup is NOT an exemption for the diesel particulate filter, and if you're smelling diesel exhaust you have a warranty issue.

I just bought a 2008 CPO GL-450 with 34k on it and I am have the same problems that you are having with your suv, a puff of Blue Smoke in the morning during start up. Did you ever find out what was causing the Blue Smoke during start up. If so Please share .

It seems like a lot of Benzes do this. My C class will do it every once in a while and my relative's brand new GLK even has done it.
