I've seen it several ways; Mazeltov, mazel tov, maseltof, mazetof ... it's actually spelled מזל טוב, which is why you see it represented so many different ways in English. Same thing happens with Hebrew, Arabic, Indian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian and other different alphabet based names. Was it Khadaffi? Gaddafi? That kind of thing. And while it translates to "good fortune," it's often used amongst both Ashkenazi and Sephardi as "Congratulations - finally!" Like if someone won the lottery, you wouldn't use "mazel tov." But if someone wsa married three years and finally the wife got pregnant with the first child, then "mazle tov!" Or, better yet, the daughter is finally going to get married - to a doctor no less! - then big "mazel tov!"
So since he was trying for a while to sell his car and finally it sold, "mazel tov" was in order. No?

well, Steve, it depends on intonation, right. Mazel tov! is more congratulatory, or you could say it sort of shrugingly, that means "yeah, congrats... finally, big whoop.", nu?
