On Line Source For Mobil 1 ESP Formula M

I have tried all the local car parts stores to try to find motor oil for my CDI. The exact oil that I got from my MB dealer was Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 (Emission System Protection). Meets MB-Approval 229.51.

None of the local stores has it.

The online source is http://avlube.com/mo1espfom5wc.html

As we all have talked about the GL320 seems to use oil as it breaks in. I got a "Check Oil Level at Next Fill Up" (? correct terminology) warning yesterday. I added 1/2 quart, but I'll bet it will need the other half. I have already added 1 quart in the past. So that's 1 1/2 quarts in 5,200 miles.

I had 2 quarts of the Mobil 1 ESP Formula M that I got from the dealer when I picked up the truck. Now I need more so I searched online.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if the dealer would give you credit for bringing in your own oil for a service change?

I take our 2005 Honda Civic to Jiffy Lube for service. They charge over $50 for synthetic oil on top of their regular oil change charge. I buy the Mobil 1 at CostCo and bring it with me. I get a discount for bringing in my own oil, use my AAA discount and it costs me less than $20 (not counting the price of the oil) to have Jiffy Lube change the oil.

I am not sure about bringing your own oil to a MB service. But if you were going to and wanted the correct oil, this is place to get it.

Here is a link to the Mobil specifications

For what it is worth, I just did an oil change myself on our GL320... Its really not all that hard to do... The oil pan drain plug can be accessed by removing the front most plastic "skid plate" and the oil filter (sourced from the dealer) is right under the engine cover on the front drivers side corner of the engine. It is under the plastic cap which you can unscrew with a standard oil filter wrench.

I actually decided to go a different route with the oil since I found a place right down the street from me which sells Elf Solaris LSX 5W30 which is MB229.51 approved. The CDI engine takes 9 quarts of oil.

Here is the spec on the Elf oil... just in case you can find that easier than the Mobil ESP oil.

Danno,

Thanks for the tip.

I would like to take a try at changing my own oil also.

I am going to search for more oil that meets the MB spec. For right now I ordered 6 quarts from that online supplier.

Anyone doing their own oil may also want to buy the 84mm filter wrench (14 flats) needed to remove the filter cap on the CDI. Last time it came back from the dealer the cap was on so tight I could not remove it by hand. But the tool makes it a breeze.

I found a dealer who stocks this oil by the quart. The last tine I looked AVLubricants minimum order was a case of 6 quarts. If this is not a problem, I thought their price was reasonable.

Mus,

My dealer has it by the quart also, but he is 40 minutes away. I wanted to find some locally but could not.

So I bought the minumum order of 6 quarts from AVL. I will use it, we have 2 CDI's in the family.

Were you able to re-set the service interval?

You'll need 9 quarts to do an oil change, so a minimum order of 12 quarts (or best to order 18 (3 cases) for a total of two changes.

fifth,

You are correct with the numbers.

However, I will let the dealer do the first service.

I just like to have some oil at home and I always keep 1 quart in the trucks (ML320 and GL320) to "top it off" if I get a warning message.
