Upgrading to the new Comand

Hi

After playing with the new comand system in an E-class taxa, I want it!!

How many different parts, aside from the nav system it self, does one need to upgrade?

You would surely want the "new" version from the GL, as I'd imagine it is still true that E-class gets a Becker unit and GL gets an Alpine unit. That's just an assumption, of course.

Here in Europe it's the same in both cars, just with a little different outercase. But yes I want the same one thats in the "new" GL, just need to know what is needed except for the system it self, and how coml´plicated it is.

You can absolutely upgrade the command of any ML/GL/R to a 2009 model. The 2009 command is actually made my mitsubishi now but that is immaterial as the interface is what is important. To change to a 2009 command you actually end up removing a bunch of parts: The CD changer, telephone and VCS are all internal on the 2009 command so those would be pulled and you could sell them to recoup costs. You will need some special harnessing to connect the microphone/teleaid components to the command (e.g. the connections are made under the rear seat on 2008 and earlier and would need to be moved to the rear of the new command. The SAT would stay as well as the existing amplifier (amp not confirmed yet but I will know for sure next week when I do an ML command upgrade). The old ipod kit would be removed and can also be sold. The new command allows the use of the UCI multimedia ipod interface just which allows proper use directly on the command.

so to sum up, you would need:

1. the new command unit
2. UCI ipod module
3. UCI breakout cable
4. the ipod pigtail or the USB pigtail
5. UCI power plug and cabling
6. patch cabling for the microphone and teleaid
7. conversion harness for the command (this puts the connections in the right spots for the 2009 command)

rob, what kind of cost are we looking at for this upgrade, for both the new comand system/parts and labor? Thanks.

Do you have a sense of what the approximate cost would be to do this?

Im putting together total cost estimates right now.. The price for the 2009 command from the parts counter it 7K though...

Sure doesn't seem all that worth it if parts around 7K then you add labor.

It's because I'm looking on a new one, which I might be able to get my hands on quite cheap.
I don't have a cd-changer or VCS nor TELE AID, the one I'm looking at is with out cd-changer. but with the sd-slot, ipod and HDD nav, I have no need.

We have crazy car tax here, and I read the retrofitting the comand unit in a A/B class is about US $4K, are you sure about the 7K price?

I have the telephone module and ipod, both of which cannot be used?

I need:
2. UCI ipod module
3. UCI breakout cable
4. the ipod pigtail or the USB pigtail
5. UCI power plug and cabling
6. patch cabling for the microphone and teleaid
7. conversion harness for the command (this puts the connections in the right spots for the 2009 comand)

Sounds like a lot of parts.

That was the price that they had on the computer. Im sure that there are better deals to be had since that probably involves a decent amount of dealer markup but I havent gotten a better price yet. Also since these vehicles are brand new there arent any commands available in the used parts channel from wrecks. Those will be priced much lower.

The parts have to do with specific features that you want. I would imagine that most people will want to upgrade to the UCI ipod interface as it is totally superior to the existing one. If you dont care you can certainly use the old one instead. As for the existing phone system there is supposed to be a way to get it to work.. new commands have a 'comfort telephony' option that can be enabled but none of the cars come this way in the US. it is also redundant since the new command comes with bluetooth built in. The only real reason to have comfort telephony is to have the hard wired cradle.

All of the cabling and conversion harnesses are going to be custom parts. e.g. they are not mercedes parts but rather harnesses that will need to be built to make the conversion work.

Hi there
I too have a E-class 2007 with APS COMAND retrofitted and I also want to upgrade to the new comand (Luckily theold Audio20 harnesses are still there)
So any news on upgrading would be most welcome

Myself I even have bought a couple od days ago a new comand BD0880 and hope to start the upgrade real soon (or as soon as I have some info on harnesses needed)
Best Regards
George

How did the upgrade go? I am interested in upgrading my 2007GL to the new command. My wife got a 2011 GL for Christmas and I really like the new command.

Question 2008 E350

I have the DVD Nav system, and would like to get it to the hard drive NAV system that can also allow for the Satellite Radio to update my traffic and routes. Is that possible?
