07 GL320 CDI - slight smell of diesel fuel?

for the last few days i have noticed that after i park the truck in the garage there is a ever so faint smell of diesel fuel coming from under the hood. checked fuel filler door in the back- closed tightly.

my question to the other gl320 cdi owners is - have you noticed such smell. i would have no problem accepting that the smell is normal as long as other trucks do the same.

or i have sprung a fuel leak somewhere...

thank you in advance

Never smelt it. Only places I have detected it are at the oil filler, dipstick, and fuel cap. You might check those areas to make sure all is well.

I have almost 30,000 miles (07 CDI) and have not had any problem with diesel smell.
Let us know what the mechanic finds...

Never had this issue - but I agree check the fuel cap and filler door in case there was a spill there that's causing the odor.

Only thing that comes to mind under the hood is the rubber fuel hose that clamp on the fuel filter. Make sure the clamps are tight and no leaks.

Lift up the engine cover and the filter sits top center of the engine. The hose and an electrical connector are on top. Check there for your smell.
Everything else is VERY high pressure and you would probably find that leak really really fast.

Alex,

With our '08 CDI I have on occasion smelt the exhaust from the GL. It has a very different smell than a gasoline fueled vehicle. It has been most noticable upon start-up or shut down. It does not seem to be there at all times, but perhaps it is.

Do you think the odor you are noticing is in fact from the exhaust, and not from under the hood?

Does anyone know how the particulate filter cleans or regenerates itself? On my Silverado, it periodically does this, usually on long steady highway runs. Often times, when I stop and get out, I notice a smell like a self-cleaning oven or like when you are burning off your gas grill. I don't drive the GL 320 often enough to have smelled this, if they even do the same thing.

The only weird smell I ever encountered was on a very cold day and the exhaust smelt like a cross between ammonia and "simple green" but never a "diesel" smell.

I've had a slight Diesel smell on very cold mornings from time to time. Nothing found so far, and have never actually seen any fuel anywhere.
