Side mirror contacting door skin

We set our side mirrors to fold in when we lock the doors since new. About a couple of months ago, the driver side mirror's housing started to make contact and rub on the paint... The dealer replaced the folding mechanism and buffed out the paint under warranty. Now, it happened again and it went through the top coat so it had to be painted....

Just curious if this has happened to anyone else.

I always have problem with my folding mirrors. The first problem was occasionally the mirrors didn't open fully. I only had the car for about 3 weeks. Took it to the dealer, they lubed the whole mechanism. The problem went away. Couple months later, my friend noticed the drive side mirror is touching the door when the car is in armed mode. Took it back, they made some adjustments to correct the problem. About a month later, the mirror was touching the door again. This time they decided to replace all the mechanical parts. It was all good until couple weeks ago, the problem came back again. I haven't have time to take it back. The funny thing is that it only happen to the driver side.

I have no luck with this car. This mirror problem is nothing compare to my other problems.

Try not to slam the door whist the mirrors are in motion, and your problems will vanish, guys...

Mmmm... no, we were never getting in or out of the door while the mirrors were in motion. The only time the mirror in motion were: stopped in front of our garage waiting for the door to open, backing out of drive way, locking/unlocking the doors while walking away/toward the car in the parking lot. After our second replacement of the driver side mirror, we turned off the auto folding feature to reduce the times that the mirror folds. Hopefully this will keep the contact from happening again.

Just noticed that our '08 has been doing the same damn thing. The door already has some damage that I hope can be buffed out. It's the wife's DD so I haven't driven it in a while, hence didn't see it. Off to service I guess.

Maybe not you. Wife? Valet? Carwash guy? Dealer? it's what does it.

Same problem with our 2007. Mirrors on both sides touch the door when folded closed, has rubbed through the clearcoat into the paint.

Dealer is looking to see if there is a service bulletin on this problem to fix the mirror before repainting. Anyone know whether Mercedes has come up with a solution?

could you tape a piece of foam or other soft material to your mirror where it's making contact in order to dampen the contact point?

The mirror folding mechanism was replaced under warranty on the driver's side on my wife's '08. Never had a problem since. Oh, and the paint on the door was buffed out so there is no defect noticed.

how do you change the setting to turn off the automatic folding mirrors on the GL? we just got a 2008 GL320 CDI and i just noticed ours has a mark on the door from the mirrors closing. i still have a factory warranty on it so they should take care of this right? i got the car from carmax and it only has 28k miles on it.

thanks

Yes, there is a bulletin.

The solution is to replace the folding motor with a new one.
