Extended warranty

Extended warranty
Hi Guys,
I need some advice. I have a 2007 GL 320 CDI with about 45000 miles.
I checked with the dealers here in South Florida and they quoted me an exorbitant price:
1 additional year (5 years total) up to 100000 miles for $ 3700.00
Do you think it is worth it or should I take the risk. by the way I drive about 36000 miles per year.
Any thought would be greatly appreciated

That sounds pretty high. If it's an MB warranty, you would have one year from the date you pass 50K (OM warranty). Read This Extensive Topic

This is high, but is close to what I was quoted the last time my car was in for Service B. It seems like the service advisors are running this past every customer that is coming in, which makes sense right now.
The only thing I have to compare this price to was the $1600 that was quoted to me on a 2003 BMW 745i as it was coming of its 4 year / 50K warranty - at that price the warranty seems like a no-brainer but at $3400 for the GL it makes one think twice.
Also, I wouldn't enter into any extended warranty with anyone unless the excluded items are very clear and spelled out. Just my .02

$3,700 is a big number. I think I would be inclined to keep the money and take my chances assuming the car's been well maintained and fairly reliable to date........

Have you had any unusual problems.....spent a lot of time in the shop. Service B is not covered under the existing warranty or any other warranty, so standard maintenance issues are out-of-pocket dollars on our dime anyway. I would escrow 3000.00 in a special account and self-insure...if no problems in one year either keep unused dollars in account and replace up to the 3000.00 and drive another year.

Besides the hose problems at the beginning I never had any problems with the car. It is maintained by Mercedes and I did all services so far. I'm only afraid if I would have problems with the electronic parts it would be worth it.
Thanks for all your opinions

I would not bother with it.
Based on your driving habits, you will be purchasing the warranty for a total of 40 thousand miles or about 1 year. You are at 45, now soon to be at 50, plus 36k per year? I don't think it would be worth your while. The things that are going to go wrong probably aren't going to happen for the next two years. Air-matic, electrical issues, etc, this will all most likely happen in year 5. I guess another way to say it is, I doubt you will run into issues costing in excess of $4,000 in the next 14 months.

Do car insurance companies offer car repair insurance? My R.V. insurance covers unexpected repairs on almost everything except normal wear items brakes, clutch, tires etc.
The peace of mind for a reasonable cost per month would be worth it.

My rational was that if the Command unit, interior electrical or some issue with the transmission, turbocharger fuel system etc goes out, the repair bill will easily rocket past the $4000.00 mark, and I would then be glad I only had to pay a $100.00 deductible.
These systems are fairly new to the dealer technicians and based on what myself and several forum members have gone through, who knows what the next issue we Mercedes test drivers (AKA owners) will come across. (Remember that tranny valve body thing?)
I am now looking forward to the next 50000 miles of warranted driving.
