OEM HID Headlights

I have a set of OEM hid lights complete packages. 2008-2009 Mercedes GL450 Two (2) Xenon Headlights
One (1) Right and One (1) Left Headlight
Headlights In Perfect Working Condition!
Both have mount tab broken off where
bumper mounts to the headlight.
Both are complete assemblies with all
bulbs and xenon control modules.
Headlights retail for $1600 each

Asking $975 obo for the complete set. I purchase these for my GL and changed my mind. Someone within this forum said that once the lights are installed the computer must updated for HID's

Please email me with any questions bykw231@gmail.co

yes, the computer needed to be reprogrammed, which cost $100 at the dealership, but then he had problems with his blinkers. not sure what happened next.

generally speaking broken mounting tabs and a very low post count usually means stolen xenon

Why would a salvage yard person break mounting tabs to extract something as valuable as HID headlights -spending a couple extra minutes in removal to keep them pristine means extra $$ at resale ( or any high end fragile part like this ) , unless he's so wealthy he doesn't care .

Is that a OEM HID light for that price or just the plain halogen light?

What about a pair of the headlights, supposedly from a wrecked 450, with no broken tabs? What would I need to be sure they had to completely convert from non-Xenon to Xenon? (Other, of course, than the fog lights.)

I was able to upgarde to Xenon finally. I bought two Xenon headlights from Ebay about $500 (tab was broken on one of them) and then I had the dealer changed the settings to Xenon (cost me $100). Finally I was missing a harness which dealer installed for me with some more updates to the computers (cost another $500). The headlights, blinkers, low beam all works fine now.

You should try upgrading yours instead of selling it.

So what would I need, soup-to-nuts, to swap from existing headlights to an OEM system - levelers, turners, rain sensors, harnesses, the whole shebang?

I was just about to ask the same question!

Additionally, I'd like to know if you can hook the xenons up to the existing non-xenon harness, with the understanding that curve illumination might be non functional, but at least you get the leveling control? Or does that even not work?

Conversion from Halogen to OEM xenon

There are two types of xenon headlights in GL. One is the self-leveling headlight; other one is just regular xenon. If you have two modules attached on the back of the headlights (u can verify this with KW2 if u are buying it from him) then they are self leveling but if u only have one module then its just regular xenon. However, they both can be installed because your car comes with the computer that is installed at back of the car for self leveling headlights even though u have Halogen currently.

Your car with Halogen headlights has 3 harnesses going into the headlight assembly versus car with xenon has 4 harnesses. So it means you need to buy

Of course a set of xenon headlights
A set of harness for the right & left headlight

Anyways, it’s a 2-step process (took me ten steps to do it but of course every dealer I knew told me it can’t be done and I finally got it to work).

First step:

Change the Halogen headlights to xenon (You will save some money if u do it your self or have a local shop do it for u)

Now, when u turn on your headlights, it will flicker and turn off after 30 seconds. Your GL computer is not recognizing the xenon headlight and it is turning the headlights off for safety.

Second step:

Dealer needs to run the star diagnostic in order to switch to xenon which will fix the issue and the headlights will work fine.

Now at this point your headlights will work fine but the low beam won’t work and the turn signals will blink faster than normal however, it works fine on the outside (will blink at the normal rate).

The reason for the above issue is the forth harness that is not connected. You need to connect the forth harness and update another computer which will fix everything. I had the first step done at a local shop and second step done at the dealer (Mercedes Benz of Hoffman Estates- Chicago land area). This is a tedious process for the first timer, which I have paid the price. Should be a piece of cake if you follow the instructions.

Hmm. Are not all OEM xenons supposed to be self leveling (or am I using the wrong term?). Or did you mean that the 2 models are with or w/out curve illumination?

BTW, that is very useful info!

Thanks,
Ved

There is DS1 & DS2 lighting system in GL. Mine is self leveling auto adjust. There is no curve illumination though.
