Tire wear question

What kind of mileage are you guys seeing out of your tires? Only reason I ask is that we have had quite a few people complaining lately about their tires wearing out quickly. By quickly, I mean 12k-15k miles. So I guess I will set a little poll.

Not enough options: "over 20k miles" should be just the beginning. ONLY 20k miles is just barely enough. Also, wheel size may play an important role. 18", 19", and larger wheels will have very different expected tire lives.

My first GL450 had 35000 miles on its original Conti 18" tires. I would say that I could easily get 40K out of that set but I sold the car before buying new tires.

I got 26K out of my OE Latitudes, 18". 2008 GL320. I put on Michelin Cross Treads. Hope to get more miles with them. Happy so far for 5K.

It's funny you guys mention "over 20K" as a starting point. I have a client who is going on their third set at 32k miles. They are not real happy at the present moment.

I agree there should be more mileage choices. I also think you should ask if one tire wears out faster than the others. Someone, I think one of the techs, said something to me about it being normal for the right rear tire to wear out before the other three because most of the power heads to the right rear tire even in the four wheel drive system. Sounded like to me, but it would be interesting to "find out" nonetheless. I think he was just trying to make me feel better about it without realizing that A) I rotate the tires when they're supposed to be and B) the other three were replaced under road hazard warranty.

So, duh!

30K out of OE Michelin Latitude. Ended up replacing them with the same tire, because they handle so well, even though they are very expensive.

While I certainly loved the way the Latitudes handled, as a performance tire they wore very quickly. But the real kicker for me remains "what's available in that size?" Having 18" wheels doesn't help, I guess!

I am on the 19 Conti's and have 17k+ on them with one rotation at service A and they seem to have atleast another half a year in them. Actually I am impressed with these tires for there durability. What are you guys going with on the replacements?

I just retired the Conti 19" after about 28K. Contis wore down very rapidly over the last 3-4 months. Rotated every 5K miles or so. At my last visit to the dealer (about 24K miles) I was told I would get about another 5-6K miles out of the remaining tread. I did not like the way the Contis began to wear from the middle tread out (cupping?).

Replaced with Pirelli Scorpions.

Middle tread ? Overinflated tires ?
I am happy with my Conti Contacts 255-50-19 now at 20K and still have 6/10 tread evenly worn. I rotate them at every 6,5K mile and inflate them to 32 F and 36 R.
Have no complaint whatsoever.

gl tires

OE Conti's (19") really blew; starting cupping at 15K miles even with proper rotation, etc. Suffered through vibration and noise until 25K miles and replaced two weeks ago with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx. Seem to be very quite, but after the racket from the Conti's, it might just be the comparison. Will report back as tires wear.

I got 33K out of my OEM Dunlops (2007 450). Replaced them with Michelin X-Terrains. Love the Michelin's.

Just took my GL320 into the dealer for a slow leak in the left front tire. Our GL has about 12,000 miles. They found a nail in the tire with a leak, but also noted that the tires have only 3/32 of tread left (recommended replacement) and that the left rear tire has a chunk of rubber missing.

I thought every new vehicle came with a road hazard on the OEM tires these days. We asked for a replacement under the road hazard warranty and they basically laughed at us. Mercedes Benz Houston North is telling us that the warranty on the tires is between us and the Continental Tire and Rubber company. Does this sound right?

Yes, it does sound right. AND it also means that the dealer(s) have no incentive to intercede on your behalf (and Conti doesn't have any incentive to do ANYTHING) since the dealer assumes you are stuck and will buy a new set of tires from them! Sound cynical? It is meant to be!
