2010 C300
GL BlueTec Pulling a Boat

Hey guys, Bought (Leased) my wife a new 2010 C300 the other day and I love the ride. I currently have an C2500 quad cab to pull our Wakeboard boat back and forth to the lake. Pulls great, but the gas mileage is bad! I can quickly spend close to $200.00 in gas just for one weekend of boating. So I am looking at the GL BT as a vehicle for pulling the boat and everyday vehicle for myself. Looking at trading in the 2500 and a 03 Nissan Pathfinder in and leasing an GL BT. So my question is has anyone or is anyone using there GL to pull a boat and if so, how well does it pull, getting in and out of the launch ramp and fuel economy?

PS. Boat weighs in at 4700 lbs. not counting beer, boards, beer, cooler, beer, etc.

GL BT will have no trouble towing your boat and gear. I have an ML320 BT that's been used to tow boats and other heavier loads (7K+ lbs). I've never felt like the ML was underpowered. The ML replaced a full sized chevy pickup.

I don't think you should have any problems towing your boat at all. I have the GL450 and our boat weighs 5700 dry, no toys. The GL does a great job, my only complaint is the mirrors are too small and all you see is boat. The GL450 tows 7,500lbs and I imagine the BT towing slightly more. You won't be dissapointed with the towing of the GL.

Edited to add: The launch ramp is not a problem what so ever, since the GL is 4-matic (full time) there is no slip on the ramp when pulling the boat out. We pull out full of people (5 or more) toys, ice chests etc and never once has an issue.

I tow a 28ft 5000lb boat with my GL320.

I couldn't say that you wouldn't know it was behind you but it is so much better than my previous experience with the same boat behind my ML, that was not much fun. The GL tows strong, brakes well and is rock steady at 50mph. The last picture is the ML.

Great boat!!! I love Cobalt's. Have been contemplating buy a 242 or 262 and towing it with our GL320.

I would bet that combo weighs alot more than 5000 lbs. 5000 boat only no fuel maybe. But if you add fuel, gear, and trailer weight, I would think you are at 7K.

I have towed my 22' wake board boat with mine. 6000 lbs with gear and trailer. The GL handles the weight well, but the air ride feels a little twitchy with the tongue weight. Not scary or anything but a different feel than leaf springs. My mileage was 18 MPGs with 6th gear locked out, on a hilly road at 60 MPH.

Created this thread when I first purchased our 2007 GL 320 CDI in August, 2008. Many of the comments are germane to your request for information.

https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...iler-long.html

As of this morning I had 18,966 miles on the GL. This includes one round trip from NE Ohio to Sebring, Florida towing our trailer (~2600 miles/ round trip), one 1400 mile round trip towing to Barber Motorsport Park in Leeds, Alabama, one round trip to Putnam Park west of Indianapolis (~700 miles) and at least a 15 trips to Mid Ohio and Nelson Ledges (~200 miles round trip each for a total of 3000 miles). If I add correctly that sums to 7000 miles of towing a 6000# trailer at mostly highway speeds. I have averaged ~16mpg while towing and nearly 20 mpg overall. The GL is as close to a daily driver as I have and it is only one of two cars we drive year round. IMO the GL is the best all around car I have owned and the only car I would consider replacing it with is the V8 diesel GL 420 CDI that is not available in the US. The GL has not had a major malfunction and has required nothing more than routine maintenance and fuel. Highly recommended for towing and anything else you care to do with it.
