Measuring oil level

Other than the dip stick, is there any way to check the oil level in a GL? In my C class and old ML, this could be done from the instrument cluster.

I did a quick search on this forum and did not find anything about how to do this, only someone saying that from the Min on the dipstick to the max is approx 2 quarts.

I did an oil change yeaterday using the dipstick suction method, and put in 9.5 quarts of M1 0w40. The oil registers halfway between the min and max on the dipstick after a 15 min drive and 3 hour cool down.

I was hoping for something like my C55 has which tells me there is 8.0L thru the dash menu.

I use the same method as you do for oil change. I have noticed that the oil quantity recommended in the owner's manual is not enough. I have been filling with 10 quarts. At the same time you don't want to overfill too. If the oil level reads between min and max then it should be appropriate. You will get a warning light at instrument panel when the oil is low.

No, unfortunately the electronic monitoring system is removed ... thanks to the neanderthals that can't live without a dipstick. I read they still haven't convinced BMW, but Mercedes has capitulated.

There WILL be an electronic warning if something is wrong with the level, i.e. too high or too low. (as noted)
