22 Inch Tires

22 Inch Tires
Whats the best size to run with a 22 inch setup? I've heard 295/40/22, 285/40/22 and even 305/40/22... I think 295/40/22 would possibly be best, but interested to hear what others are running as well as pro's and cons of each.

All of the tires you are considering are going to have a 3-4 % speedo error. The gl550 combination is 295/40x21 with a diameter of 30.3 which is the same as the other GL models. The tires you mentioned have diameters of 31.3, 31.6. and 31.1.

The factory tires offered on the gl450-550 range in size from 769mm o.d. (gl550) to 785mm o.d. on the gl450 with the 19 tire option...so even the factory set ups are not all going to be exactly the same.
Per Bigwheels.net, they have a nice page that shows the overall diameter of each tire you are looking at.
The widest tire that fits in that range of overall diameter is a 305/35-22 at 772mm high, but it only comes in the pirelli scorp at $311 per tire (back in 07 they we around 450 per tire!). This will look really good, especially if you are lowered a few inches!
After burning thru a set in 19k miles, I opted for a 305/40-22, overall diameter 803mm. This size is very common and very inexpensive. You will have much more choice in tread pattern and tread compound as well.
I would recommend a 305/40/22...if you are on a 22X 9-10 inch wide rim with a off set of ~48-55et.
I money is no concern and you don't encounter snow, get the 305/35/22.

Ultimately, these trucks are not that specifically tuned with respect to tire overall diameter (assuming the same from front to back). We are talking full 15 mm in difference from one factory tire to another. Plus you could have a 10mm drop just from low tire pressure, and the truck will still run just fine.
Your speedo will be off a little...3% at 60 mph is 1.8 mph is certainly not life altering.
Which rims are you looking at?

Go to 1010tires.com and use the tire size calculator. You'll see that the 305/40 22 results in a speedometer difference of only 2.263% which is not of any significance. The 285/40 22 provides the closest diameter to the OEM tires and only has a speed difference of only 0.223%.
I went with 295/40 22 because I wanted the Michelins. If not, I would have gone with the 305/40s. I would have been concerned, however with putting the 305s on a 22x9 rim. The installer said it would have been fine though.
I wouldn't go with the 305/35 because they will result in you odometer ticking off miles faster than it should.

305/35-22 overall diameter is 772mm
295/40-21 overall diameter is 769mm (stock on gl550)
so the 305/35 will not change your speedo "any more" than putting on a set of oem gl550 rims/tires....fyi

Psoas, the OP is talking about the GL450, not the 550. They aren't the same diameter. The diameter of the OEM tires on a 450 is 785mm and as you already stated, the 550 OEM tires are 769mm in diameter. If the OP had a 550, then the 305/35 would make sense.
For every 100 miles of actual driving distance, the odometer will have an added additional 2 miles if you used the 305/35 on the GL450. This makes no sense.

Who told you about not putting 305's on 22x9? You also mentioned that installer says ok with it? I think offset of the rims is +35.
Thanks.

I am right at the edge of the front fender now with 305/40's on 9.5 et 48 rims.
If you go with the 9's at et35 you are going to be 9mm beyond the set up on my truck.
All depends on the look you are thinking about.
