RSE in 07 GL450

Hello Everyone

I am new to the forum. I am planning to buy a 2007 GL450 and noticed that some of them have RSE installed and screens on headrest, while others don't.

My question is if I buy it without any screens (RSE) installed, how easy is it to get it installed (OEM one), and what will be the cost (ball park) including parts and labor?

Thanks

Forget about the OEM, it is going to cost you fortune. The non OEM which look identical to OEM will cost you aruond $1500.00

Thanks for the reply mbmama. Do you have any recommendation for non-oem brands? And does non-oem work via existing controls and buttons on the system/steering wheel?

The oem RES cant be controlled from the front.. Neither via the head unit, nor the steering wheel controls. This is actually the only thing I hate about my GL.

Hi dinodino
If you are thinking about OEM RSE, things are getting interesting. Thats the reason I just had RSE prewiring instead of the crapp factory unit on my 6 week old GL. Check out this link

I plan to get this but I live too far away from this place for now (North Dakota). If you live close by, this is the way to go instead of spending $2000 on factory unit.

Interesting. My assumption was that it will work with those built-in buttons on steering wheel. But if that is not the case, how do you control it? Is there a remote? In any case, there must be an easy solution which does not demand driver distraction, I assume.

hman, sorry I posted my reply before reading yours. Two iPads! Wow! That is definitely what I would like to have. I will contact them to see if they can ship the parts and have someone install them locally. I am in the Northwest. Did they tell you that it has to be installed from them? It seems that they will have a system for Cayenne too.

Simply put.. you don't. Your rear passengers do.

Yes, but it only works if you are pointing it towards the back of the headrest, and even if you manage to do it from the driver seat, you have no visual of what the remote is doing.

Another thing is if you want to use the aux jacks in via the RSE (these are found below the passenger seats) The Headrest LCD screen has to be on.

I really wish I knew about this before I went out of my way to get one with the RSE - I would have been better off with the off road package (an no RSE) for the same money.

Good luck!

you can add video to the front command and use a remote extender to control the rear screens from the front, done it many of times

Thanks everyone for your time and for providing very useful information. I am buying a one without RSE and will add dual iPads as hman suggested. Will add pics when ready. Can't wait!
