Pirelli OR Toyo

I'll be receiving my '12 GL350 in December, and am trying to get a head start on tire/Wheel combos. I'm looking at the 305/40/22 Pirell Scorpion. OR, the more aggressive looking Toyo Open Country in the same size. Anyone out there with either one of these? Thanks for your input.

I had Pirell Scorpions on my LR3 and I will never have another set. Had Toyos on the corvette and really liked them but I never put on enought miles to see how they will wear but the tread pattern is cool looking

When I upgrade sometome before the spring I think I'll get Hankook Ventus ST RH06

I spent an hour or so at the tire shop on Friday, talking to the "expert" about my options. I think I'm pretty sure that I'm going with the Toyo Open Country, 305/40/22. I'm leaning toward a set of Vossen, 22x10.5 wheels (078 w/ black lip)
There are a couple of pictures on the Vossen website that show this set up. If you look at the first page of the wheel gallery, under the 078 model, you will see a couple examples. There's a white GLK with 20x9s (street tires), and right below it is a G-Class, 22x9s, with the Toyo OP that I will get.
In talking to the "expert", he believes that the black lip of the wheel and aggressive AT tire may give the truck a "too raunchy" look.

Scorpions will last no more than 15-18K miles. But even worse is they'll only perform at best for 10K miles, the rest are iffy. I have Toyo's on for 3/4 of the year, then switch to 18" rims with Blizzacks in the worst of winter - I love them.

I haven't been a Pirelli fan since I hated my P6's in the 70's. But I have changed my mind on one model - read my last paragraph.

I had the Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico - the one you are looking at - in 235/50-18 and had mixed feelings. Their turn-in and dry road handling certainly put them in the high performance, fun-to-drive category.
Although I got rid of the car (VW Tiguan SEL 4Motion) at 11,000 miles, the tires looked like they would last about 22 - 24,000 miles until 4/32." "Spirited" driving.
But they were unimpressive in wet and lousy in snow. Not a winter tire.

On the other hand, I now have 19" Pirelli Ice and Snow on my ML, and I am very impressed with them. They are better than Blizzaks in snow, they look to get 22,000 miles, and they are actually responsive and fun to drive. It's the first time in years I haven't had to mount another set of winter tires! They aren't available in your 22" size, but I have actually found a Pirelli that I like!

I absolutely HATE pirelli's. ABSOLUTE CRAP!

Toyo makes good tires. Had positive experiences with their T1-S, T1-R, and their R888's.

Thanks for your response folks. I've determined that I'm going with the Toyo, Open Country AT, in 305/40/22. I'm relying on the aggressive, tall sidewall, to also give me some curb protection. My last dilemma, is to figure out if I'm going with a black lip rim, OR, the same rim with a polished, stainless lip.

That's awful. I been driving my GL for about a month now on the run flats. I plan on getting new wheels soon. Thanks for the info.
