My GL stuck in wet grass...
Yesterday my GL got stuck in wet grass. It had rained 2 days ago for a few days before that. Its 75 degrees out and sunny and all 4 wheels are spinning now in the light mud below the grass. I've raised up the car and pushed the off road button and put wood planks that we had under the tires and still stuck 24 hours later. Now this is just wet grass, 5 feet off the road. My parents kia soul which is only front wheel drive didnt even get stuck. I'll call MB roadside assitance tommorrow I guess if I'm still stuck.
I did try ESP on and off also.
pretty disappointed in this aspect of the car. I dont see this car capable of any offroading if it gets stuck in wet grass, let alone actually really offroad.

Finally unstuck. A guy with a truck and a chain pulled me out in 10 seconds. Don't drive on wet grass in your GL!

I've taken my GL off road in some pretty hairy desert terrain...Would not have expected wet grass to be the showstopper. Glad you got it out, all inconvenience aside - that is pretty comical. Did you try rocking it?

pteam, what brand and model of tires stranded you?
I could tell you about the time I stuck my Land Cruiser with Dick Cepek Mudders in a city park in Nebraska - pretty embarassing when the tow truck arrived. I had cut through the turf and bottomed the chassis.
Surprisingly, my ML embarasses my Land Cruiser in the really treacherous Colorado Mountains!

Open diffs suck. If you want an SUV that works a bit better than this, ditch the larger wheels and car tires in favor of 17s with some good rubber like a BFG All Terrain K/O. Then, if you get stock, you have enough sidewall to air them down. That' makes a HUGE diff in traction. I know you never see BFG's on a GL, but that's what I'd run. They run plenty smooth for an AT and to me, look better anyway.

I speak from experience. My wife has a '10 GL550 and I drive a '10 LX570. We've had the same experience that Pteam had re the GL getting stuck in wet grass, typically after soccer games. The LX on the other hand is unstoppable when you use 4 low and lock the center differential. It gobbles up wet grass, mud, and deep snow. The locking differential makes a huge difference. Try going down an icy slope without the differential locked.
Where the GL shines is when the weather's clear and we need to get somewhere fast. That's why we have both.

In real life, the "Magic Button," as we in the Pikes Peak MBCA Section call the "Off Road button," replaces locking differentials very well, thank you.
The heightened "alertness" of the traction control in applying individual brakes tames any spinning wheel and transfers power to anything with traction. Yet it still gives differential action allowing wheels to follow their different paths - around corners or over big rocks - without the breaking of traction forced by locked diffs.
Now, all we need is at least one tire that retains a coefficient of friction, which it appears that our OP, pteam may not have.... at least in wet grass.
I agree about tire pressure, but my 19 inchers respond to 25 lbs quite well. 17-ers with 18 lbs might be better, but I like the response of the 50 series tires on pavement.

My SO runs Yoko H rated Geolander AT/ S on her Rav4. I run the same tires on my G500. These are 3 season AT tires. We run Bizzacks in the winter in the icebox of CT.
She shows her pugs and judges bulldogs at many dog shows that are at state fairgrounds where she has to park on the wet grass and she is always loaded down with equipment. Has never been stuck. Quiet tire too on the highway.
Of course the G wagon has no bogging down problems. The standard tire is the yoko HT/S which is a highway tire. I would not use these for my agricultural excursions. The AT/S is an off road tire which is what you should consider. They wear fast on the heavy G but no appreciable wear on the Rav. Consider them for your truck.
Btw her initials are AMG.

Tires more than anything, although lockers will help. No problems with snow tires for me on literal ice rinks getting traction, but wet leaves/grass is a killer for almost all systems, including traditional transfer case systems with rear posi.
There are lots of vids on youtube of all kinds of 4x4s stuck in seemingly mild situations.
