For example, my 2005 LR3 had so much sh*t break that I wish I had an extended warranty - hydraulic suspension ($2K), electrical problems ($1K+), broken tail gate lock ($700), broken driver door lock ($400), broken seat heaters (would have been $700, but I chose to drive around with them broken than spend the money), speakers that would intermittently stop working (again, never fixed because I didn't want to dump more money into the car), broken water pump ($700), grinding in the front suspension/differential when making a left turn (who knows how much that would have cost? I just traded it in for a GL instead of fixing it), AUX input in rear seat didn't work (never spent the money to fix it), refrigerated cooler in center console broke (again, didn't waste money fixing it), spare tire crank wouldn't tighten all the way (so spare tire was lose and would dangle a bit under the car), etc....
I expect the GL will be more reliable than the POS Land Rover LR3, but it's nice to know that whenever something breaks it will get fixed.

BTW, the transmission was the big repair. However, within this year I've had to take the GL to the dealer because of the tailgate not latching and the power steering leaking and seizing because of a loose connection. The car is excellent but 3 repairs this year made the extended warranty a no brainer for me.
It's for peace of mind and I'm hedging that something else may fail on the vehicle. =)
