Question about compartment that slides out above cigarette power lighter.

Question: does that compartment supposed to slide very fast/quick? Or is it supposed to slide out slowly and stop? I've had it slide out both slowly and very fast/uncontrolled.

Sorry it's just bothering me whenever I open it up when I drive.

Take it apart?

it's a broken spring. There's a spring that pushes it out and a softer spring that counters it to make it slow. The second one is broke and will need to be replaced. Mine is broke right now and comes out fact.

This compartment fits in same place as controls for two speed transfer box for those lucky enough to have that.

Would anyone happen to know how exactly one can take apart that compartment from within? 2nd spring right?

I spoke to my father's mechanic. Just to reach that comparment and its internal, one has to take push forward the driver side seat all the way AND then take apart the whole center console side cover and this and that...

If you do tear it all apart can you take some photos measurements of how much room (if any) is back behind the cigarette lighter and storage drawers? I'm thinking of doing a few mods to my GL and want to know if my idea is even possible with the space available.

Thanks
George

Huh? All you have to do is grab the bottom edge of the center wood panel and pull it toward the rear of the vehicle. There are two clips that hold it in place and it pivots from the top (below the COMAND unit). Then you can access the drawer assembly.

It might take 2 minutes to disassemble the first time, 10 seconds thereafter.

Really huh? My pop's mechanic said differently. Mine is an 07 so would that make any sort of difference?

If what you said is true, then I may do this later today...

Seems like your father might be inadvertently putting the mechanic's kid through college.

lol the mechanic is 22 years old. Not much older than me really. He looked at a computer system at the shop which my dad has the Mercedes diagnostic computer software to see.

However I will give what you said a try.

You are under 22 years old and driving a GL? Just wondering why.

Yeah I am. It's a nice comfy large safe SUV and it doesn't scream "LOOK AT ME" on a college campus unlike some other kids in my parking deck who have modded GTOs, Infiniti Gs, BMW 3 series, Mercedes C classes, a single brand new E550 4Matic, and one dude with a modded E90 M3 Sedan.

You're welcome for the insight.

Mine broke on my ML years ago, (kid thing). What I did was to fold a piece of paper several times and wedge it between the top of the ashtray and the bottom of the storage bin. The pressure the paper exerted was enough to force the other spring in a position where it could work, and viola, fixed.

Open the ashtray, and use your fingers to push up under the bottom of the bin. If you try to open it and it's normal (slow) the paper fix will work. If not, see the start of these instructions. (Its from Mid City Engineering, also a forum sponsor)

Just my mother thank you. I worked pretty hard to earn and copay this car. Don't just assume it was handed to me.
