Afternarket warranty saved me again.

I had a wheel bearing go out. It was VERY loud and sounded as if I had rocks in the differential. Never had a wheel bearing go out on any vehicle I've owned. I've got just over 100K. I think that's a bit soon for a wheel bearing to fail.

While it was in the shop, they noticed that another air strut was going bad. Warranty picked up both repairs. Initial estimate for the repairs is over $1,000 and that's assuming no damage was done to the hub.

Airmatic is not as problematic or as expensive as ABC but this is making me worry. I still have two original air struts. I hope, if they fail, they do so before the warranty runs out.

Chrysler Service Contracts. I don't think they are issuing any new policies for Mercedes vehicles.

Good to hear positive feedback about an aftermarket warranty. I always thought it was a gray area when it came to those companies.

It can be, just depends on what you get, from which company, and what you pay. Some are great, some are mediocre, some are rip-offs.

I bought my warranty from Mercedes when I purchased new. It was ~$4K to extend the factory warranty for an additional 2yrs and up to 125K miles (total of 6yrs/125K). Not cheap, but we put a lot of miles on the GL, so I fully expect to use up the entire 125K miles of value.

Is there any advantage to going after market? I figured going with the factory would avoid any problems.

None whatsoever. Aftermarket is the only warranty available to folks that buy outside the original warranty period and non CPO cars.

I assume you bought a MB extended warranty. This is dated a few years, but I had a bad experience with this. You can search on extended warranty in the forum to see the issue, but let me summarize. You stated it perfectly - it's an extra 2 yrs and up to 125K miles. It's not a 6 yr/125k warranty. Let me tell you what happened to me on my ML500

I bought an extra year and up to 100,000 mile warranty, thinking I had a 4 year/100,000 mile warranty then. I never really look at years, because I am a high mileage driver.

I had something go wrong at 54,000 miles, after my base warranty expired. The car was a little over 2 years old. At that point the clock started. 13 months later my car had another issue. Now my vehicle was a little over 3 years old. My car had 75,000 miles on it, and the service manager had to break the news that my extended warranty had expired because it covers 1 year after the original warranty expired (for either time or mileage).

Hopefully that was understandable, but it's confusing. If you drive 25,000 miles a year, your warranty will never get you to 125,000 miles. More than likely it will get you about 4 years because you'll surpass the original warranty on miles at about 2 years, then have 2 years after that.

Thanks for the explaination. I'll have to check the fine print on my contract - the dealer never explained it to me that way! And if that is the case, F*CK Mercedes - I'll never buy another one again...

According to their pamphlet,

"Based upon your vehicle model, you may choose to continue
your warranty coverage up to 5, 6 or 7 years from the original
4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty start date —
up to either 75,000 or 100,000 miles."
