Moving to California with GL 320 CDI

I am planning to move to California with GL 320 CDI.

My research so far tells me that I can register the vehicle in CA as I am the original owner of the vehicle even though it has more than 7500 miles.

I am not sure what yearly emission check requirements are needed in CA. This vehicle does not need emission check in the current state GA.

Does anyone who lives in CA has this vehicle? Can you let me know what to expect?

Is it a good idea to move the vehicle in the first place? I love this vehicle and will be sad to let go because I have problems moving it to CA.

Appreciate any information.

I live in Fresno County and have never had to Smog my '10 GL450...but I pay the annual smog abatement fee...so it may be different for you. I do know, however, that the GL320CDI was NOT sold in CA or NY because it did not meet the emissions standards. The Diesel was not offered in those states until Mercedes introduced Bluetech with the GL320 Bluetec. I don't know what kind of issue you may have, or if you try and register your car here if you will have to get it smogged. If your car doesn't pass smog you won't be able to register it.

Your car is too new. You'll have to start smogging it in a couple of years.

You'll be able to register it just fine.

regarding registration of a car you own when you move into Califirnia:
Check the CalTrans website for the registration requirements for your situation. I DO know that, as long as a diesel was not PURCHASED NEW from a dealer in CA prior to 2009 [think BluTec] it CAN be registered providing it is at least several months old - look up the exact time or miles they require.
The CalTrans website should also tell you exactly what the periodic registration requirements are AFTER you are first registered there (besides $$$)
I bought my 2004 Touareg from a private party in LA and he had a valid CA registration/plate/title. He had purchased it used from a dealer in the LA area and I'm sure he didn't have any problems that way.

Thank you all for the quick responses.

I think I need to do more research on whether this vehicle will pass smog test in CA.

Otherwise, I feel that I can register it (provided it passes smog test).

I have one - same year even

Not an issue at all. I bought it CPO ~3 years ago, had it shipped from out of state and registered it without any issue (granted, I registered it before the smog on diesel engine was required). And I renewed the registration once that required smog check. Not an issue, either.

So you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Anyone may register any Diesel vehicle in Califiornia provided it has 7,500 miles.
At 7,500 miles or more, it is considered used.

You should have nor expect any problems when registering it here in the Golden State.

That's how the 2005 Benz CDI I just bought used came into California originally.
2005-2006 CDIs were not legal for sale here when new, so every one you now see here was
bought new out-of-state and then registered here after it had 7,500 miles on the odometer.
And there are a few to be sure!
There was more than one way to get around Californias regulations don't you know?

The original owner had it smogged last October, and it will need to be smogged every two
years for that same month, the month it was first register here in October 2005.

HTHs

Thank you zoink and Derrel.

Your replies make me feel better. I will be moving my vehicle to CA for sure now.

Thanks again.
