considering used GL450/550
I'm considering getting a 2010 GL450 or GL 550. Does anyone think getting CPO is worth it? Or should I just look for a used one that is still under warranty.
Also, what year is the most reliable?
thanks

Definitely CPO and I would suggest a later model year like 2010, 11,12.
As in most MB models the first few years of a new launch come with various defects that MB eventually works out. I say definitely CPO because it gives you an extra year of warranty, new tires and all the services up to date. Also it guarantees that all services were performed per the MB schedule. Unless you are looking for a later model, 2012 with low mileage, that typically will not be CPO because it is too new, IMO you are good with a 2010.

We purchased a used 2010 GL550 in December. No CPO (they were considerably more expensive), but only 20,000 miles. This leaves us under warranty until November...about eight more months.
If I had to do it again AND was absolutely commited to a GL, I'd get a CPO. Ours has been in the shop twice already. Our GL relationship is going to be short OR we'll probably purchase an extended warranty. It seems the extended warranty is around $4,500...that's about the difference in price between a CPO and non-CPO (and we didn't get new tires).

the left front speed sensor failed causing that wheel's brakes to be randomly applied. was a real joke to drive with the driver's front wheel brake being applied VERY briefly and randomly. it was fixed under warranty (the sensor was less than $20).
about three weeks later, the check engine light came on. turned out to be oxygen sensor. was replaced under warranty again.
currently, the front suspension squawks over moderate bumps (like turning onto our driveway). haven't returned to dealer yet, but will soon.
this is my wife's vehicle and neither of us are impressed with the reliability. prior to GL she had a 2008 5 series - was in the shop twice over three years (ac problem and sun roof seal). prior to that, she had three Lexus RX in a row (over eight years). one of them had a battery fail...that's it.

The brake wheel sensor problem sounds dangerous, was that the case?
We have a similar taste in cars :-)
I currently have an 06 530i and my wife has an 04 Rx 330. I can say that my 530i has had numerous problems, while my wife's RX, has also had 1 battery failure and that's it.
I'm always wondering what the next thing to fail is on my 530i, though it has never stranded me. The cost of the repairs tend to be expensive as you probably know. How would you compare the reliability of your 5 series and your GL?
So you had to do it again, would you have purchased the 2010 GL?

yep, the sensor kept us from using the car over the weekend. i took it to the dealer, so my wife wouldn't have to drive it. very bizarre and intermittent.
our 5 series seemed to be more reliable, based on the initial problems with the GL (as we'd had as many trips to the dealer with the GL in two months than with the BMW in over two years). both cars were pre-owned but low mileage (20k with the GL and 18k with the 5 series).
as far as "if we'd do it again", probably not. it was more my wife's idea for the GL to begin with. I wanted the lexus GX or LX. i must say i really like the ride quality and the power, but i'm not too impressed with the NAV, etc. the voice commands work very well, but it doesn't seem on par with other brands for the money.
however, nobody beats the GL's third row seat room/comfort.
Hopefully we'll get the squawking suspension fixed and won't have anymore problems. if we do, i'll make you deal on it!

Also looking at a used GL450
We're looking at an '07 or '08 GL450 with miles in the 55K to 60K range, we looked at a some really clean vehicles but would like to have a sense of just what hidden items to look for.
Are there any inherent pricey issues to be concerned with; suspension, electronics, engine, trans, etc.
While I understand the risk of buying an older unit, I truly want to make sure I don't miss something everyone else in the world knows about except me!
Thanks for any direction you can lend.
