Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Diesel Oil on GL350 Diesel ???
Any GL350 Diesel (with DPF) owner ever tried to put Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Diesel Oil in your GL350 OM642 engine?? I know it doesn't meet MB229.51/229.52, but a lot of Diesel owner provided positive reviews. Is it safe to use it for 5k oil change intervals on a 2011 GL350 BlueTech CDI? Thanks in advance.

NO! I find it strange that they do not provide spec sheet on their oil like other oil manufacturers.
I am guessing you are trying to go with a locally available oil source. They are almost non-existent. I would rather go with Red Line Oil Euro 5W30, but for the price of under $40 for 5 liters you just simply can't beat Liqui Moly on quality and MB approvals through FCP Euro. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/5w3...ui-moly-lm2244

For me, considering an oil change is like 10K-ish miles, it's just not worth messing with something not approved. I wouldn't doubt that there are "non-approved" oils out there that would work just fine... they just don't officially have the MB stamp of approval on them (maybe didn't want to pay for it?). The ONLY way I would do it is if I did multiple, short term oil analysis' on it to determine how it's doing. Then proceeded to longer term oil analysis. But it's easier to just drink the Kool-Aid.

Thanks Dennis. I might not be able to do the oil analysis for now. So I will wait until Shell provides the detail specs for the T6 oil. Again really appreciate your input. Very helpful for the newbies, like me. lol.

The issue usually involves the environmental qualification regulations. When Mercedes Benz (or any other manufacturer) presents an engine/drive train/exhaust treatment system to the authorities for approval they have done their tests using a limited number of fuels and oils [restrictions on fuel sulfur, zinc or other additives in the oil, etc,etc]. Many of these factors are KNOWN to affect the qualification test results. Therefore, when approval is given, it is LIMITED to those variables which have been tested. Since most manufacturers move on pretty promptly to the next model/year/ etc they have no interest is broadening the number of oil types which will still pass the requirements.
If you plan on replacing the exhaust DPF anyway, then go ahead and try any oil you want. Not all lube oils will plug up the DPF but SOME will. A plugged DPF WILL throw a check engine code and in many states and locations a vehicle with a check engine light cannot be licensed to drive on the public highways.

According to Shell official doc that T6 satisfies MB Approval 228.31, but not 229.52. I will leave it for now. Thank you guys for your input.
