I have a 2007 GL450 and the lift gate won’t go up and down. There is actually no power back there at all! We started removing the parts to take a look and found some very disturbing issues. What can cause this type of damage? I’m worried that if we change the control module & pump that there will be another issue that will fry the new parts too.

That looks like there was either a leak into the area where that part was (for quite a while), or it was in a flood. Almost looks like salt water corrosion on some of those parts.

ok I’ll check that..I’m gonna change the control module first as that is completely fried and honestly it’s the easiest part to obtain. I’m having a hard time finding the pump

Try these guys here. I feel for you. I had nightmares on my sons ML 350. Replaced everything and it still didn't work. Had to take it to the dealer.

The pump should be part number A1648000748. The module should be part number 1648203185. There is fluid that goes into the pump (in the white/clear portion) the equivalent fluid is Aero Shell Fluid 41 (MIL PRF 5606H), if the part arrives empty. There is a line on the white/clear portion that shows the fill level when standing up vertically. There is a set screw on top of the white/clear fluid reservoir, use a syringe or basting bulb to fill the reservoir to the fill level. Use a product like CRC Electronic Cleaner to clean all of the terminals prior to plugging in the new parts. After parts are installed **Important** to ensure the computer accepts the new parts, plug in the key (remove the push button if Keyless Go and plug in key) and turn to second detent (just prior to starting), then push in the rear hatch button on the drivers door (as if closing the rear door latch) for 5 seconds, to ensure computer recognizes the new pump and control module. Hope it turns out okay. Let us know if you get it working.

I'm saying, look around inside the hatch to see if you can find the source. The corrosive fluid came from inside or outside. Inside, it's washer fluid or the hydraulic fluid itself. Outside, it's rainwater or water from being dunked, as in the car went swimming. I'd figure out root cause if I were you.
Stick it out; this seems maddening but you'll get there.
