Gearbox is the same
4matic system is the same
if you had airmatic/ads the suspension is the same
a lot of interior features are the same
the 2012 M273 is more powerful than the m272 v6 in the r350…

second row foot room is tighter, as I’m sure you’ve discovered.

Being built right around the same time they’re very similar and have similar components.

I really liked my Rdvark, but the GL is just so much more usable.

The X164 is physically taller but shorter lengthwise than the W251 by about 3 inches or so. Where most of the difference comes in is the wheelbase, with the R class being about 5 inches longer. The R class basically has minivan proportions with the rear axle being shifted back almost as far as possible, allowing the seats to be pushed backwards for more leg space at the expense of trunk space.

SUV proportions = less leg space unless you get a Suburban-sized SUV. No way around it. You pick whether looks or comfort is more important to you.

I considered an R-class before I bought my E350. I didn't mind the minivan look so much; the dealbreaker was the engine bay. Even the 6-cylinder looked like a massive pain to work on.

It's less trouble than you think. That cover near the windshield comes out rather easily, and the hood shock has an extension that allows it to stand straight up.

Huh, good to know! Still glad I went with the E-class, but who knows what the future holds.

I love that Mercedes hoods go so far back!

It was ok - it sits lower than a GL so reach into the back of the engine bay is easy. I had an R500 and even that wasn’t so bad. It was fast though.

You know, surprisingly, I actually prefer the look of the pre-facelift. The headlights and grill just look too anonymous.

I want to get a fully loaded 2011-2012 R350 and swap the 550 engine in. Doesn't make much sense for me to do so though since we already have an R500 and a fully loaded 2011+ R350 is hard to find and 12+ k when you do find one. Maybe when our R500 bites the dust...
