Advice for buying a used GL320 or 350
Hi just wondering if any of you have any recommendations about buying a used X164 320 or 350 thats gone around 200.000km++
and are there any common problems that i might need to know about before getting it that might be really costly to fix?
Thanks in advance

Use the search feature and enter "OM642 engine failure" "OM642 problems" "Diesel lawsuit" "Diesel settlement" "Diesel problems" "OM642 timing chain failure" "OM642 oil cooler failure" Should give you all the information you need.

Puf, I have a 320 and absolutely love it. I've had it for about 6 or 7 years, now. BUT, there are some things to be aware of - but they're not all that complicated. The engine, itself, is a fantastic engine - it's a couple of the ancillary items that cause the issue (but fixable). First, though, how do you plan on using the car and what's your reasoning for wanting the diesel? Diesel's aren't for everyone and sometimes it makes more practical sense to get a gasser.

They can work really well. Dennis is happy with his, and it is difficult to argue with experience.
Diesel engines want to run (a) near the peak of their power output, and (b) continuously. Diesel generators, for example, are a perfect application. The very most efficient engines are marine two-stroke diesels. They will run continuously for two weeks while they cross the Pacific.
I believe Dennis uses his for long hauling, which would help explain his affection. It is doing what it most wants to. Simple as that.

Not saying that diesel engines do not have worth, they do. I like diesels and originally ordered a GL320 but it was delayed so I had to get a 450. Think it worked out for the best though.
Just letting the OP know what he is getting into with the OM642. Dennis has a 320 which is the only OM642 equipped GL that has a chance for reliability in stock form. Even then, you have to ask yourself why you need the diesel. If you tow extensively or you do not take short trips, the diesel is your go to, sans bluetech, but that would be rare.

It is entirely possible to do an alphabet delete on a GL 350 and end up with a reasonably reliable car. It easier and less costly to alphabet delete a 320, but necessary nonetheless to ensure highest possible reliability out of this engine configuration.
Depending on where you live, an alphabet delete may not be a legal option for you so you’ll be stuck with the inherent unreliability of the ancillary systems in a 320 or 350.
But back to OP; do yourself a financial favor; skip the diesel and get the 450 - done.
they are great cars, plentiful and easy to find and much less costly to operate.
You lose nothing other than the maintenance nightmare and a few mpgs .

I have an 08 320cdi that I have had up for sale. It has GDE tune with dpf pipe and many new parts. It has some cosmetic issues but is a great deal if don’t mind getting your hands dirty. Although now that I am moving I am considering holding onto it, especially with todays market ☹️
