Oil For Transfer Case
Oil For Transfer Case
I went to my local Fanfaro oil outlet to buy oil for my impending transfer case chain replacement.
They have two oils that have MB specifications but I want to know which one for my MY09 GL450.
ATF VI = MB 236.14
ATF III = MB 236.1 / 236.5
Which one is correct?
Thanks.

Redline D6 ATF meets 236.12
Both Shell and Mobil ATF 134 meets 236.14 and .12, someone please back us up if these are truly backwards compatible…

Maybe @E55Greasemonkey knows.
Thanks for all responses folks. It seems X164 is more common in the USA than Europe where Fanfaro is sold more.

This product cross references the Fusch Titan ATF 3353

TC uses the same red fluid from the transmission, which you may already know. I don't think it's super critical to have the exact spec fluid; the transfer case is nothing but a chain, spider gears, and large roller ball bearings inside and really no different than any other similar transfer case from Chrysler,Jeep, or GM for the last 20 years or so. Any red ATF will probably be just fine.
Off road package
My TC is dual range with the centre dif lock. Does that still use the ATF you are discussing? I can’t find a reference to this spec TC in any of the oil spec sheets.

236.15 is for the 7G-Tronic. Fuchs 7134.
236.12 is for the transfer case on 164 and 166. Fuchs 3353.
ML/GL/GLE/GLS have hang-on transfer cases and do not share fluid with the transmission. Sedan and GLC (I think also GLK) have shared lubricant transmission+transfer cases.
No.

Just going to do an oil service on a freshly purchased GL500 with code 0430 "offroad package"
Table you provided is supercool - I'm just wondering what doeas the "*" sign means, and accidentally is just by the options I'm interested about - so the dual speed transfer case and rear axle with difflock.
Could you please provide any info as it seems that the explanation was there - it was just lost when you cropped the image

Typical of MB, the option is listed even though the fluids are the same.
