I have never replaced one but I see them on ebay all the time . Hopefully some members here can tell you if and how they need programmed. Good luck.

Ecm replacement and programming near new orleans
Hey Guys I am lost, had professional diagnostic on my 08 GL 450
I was told that ECM replacement and programming is required

There are many places that will set up an ECU for you. I changed my ECU. PresserTech helped me.
It has to be VIN coded to the vehicle and also has to be configured to match the vehicle's configuration. This can be done with removing the EEPROM from your ECU and installing it in the new one, or it can be done semi manually.
It will cost you about $1000.

Or if you have a star system with developer mode to code vin and configuration into ME9.7 the cost is only the part. I am surprised that not more of these ecus get fried on a regular basis seeing as it’s sits right on top of the engine.
