Door hinges

Hi, I have a 2012 GL 450 lately the driver side door squeaks when I open or close it I’ve put white grease and I have also sprayed WD-40 but the squeaking still doesn’t go away. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Gotta use a lithium based or silicone based product. It will need multiple applications to penetrate. Also you should spray the hinges at all different opening angles for the best results. It may take days depending on how bad the metal contact is, but it will eventually work.

Cheers

You sure its not something on the front edge of the door rubbing as you open or close?? (little bent trim piece or something, even pine needles)

Hi no. The squeaking is coming from one of the hinges. I have been using plenty of wd 40. It’s a little bit better but still squeaks

WD 40 is a water displacement product, get some silicone or lithium based spray, trust me!

Wd 40 is pretty much useless.

Water Displacement, attempt number 40

I just bought a can of silicone spray. I gave it a good application. It is slightly better. I’m gonna go ahead and do it again later. Thanks for the input guys. I’m hoping to do it a couple more times and hopefully it will go away.

I tried many different lubricants without success on my GL. I'm not sure if it doesn't get to the part of the hinge that needs it, but the noise never went away.

I’m thinking maybe these hinges are not really to be lubricated because I know certain parts in the truck cannot be lubricated because they’re sealed not sure

Ran into some MB hinge knowledge watching the door get taken off a W211 with what looks like the same hinges as a X/W164. Lubricating from the top looks like a waste of time given the hinge design, and lifting the door off its hinge or at least lifting it up somewhat to expose the mechanism should allow the lubricant to get to where it needs to go. Does not look like a difficult task either. Around 35:45 in this video:

Off topic but since you brought it up, I am now so glad to see o e of the most thorough Yoitube car channel personalities take on an MB.

Watching this guy fix broken BMWs is almost art but does nothing for me wanting one.

I tried lithium silicone base products. I sprayed it multiple times. It tends to get a little bit better and then right back that noisy squeak. I was wondering, what happened if I use the lubricants that are like liquidy would that make any difference?

"dry" lubricants are good for that. They go on very wet and thin, creep into places, then the solvents evaporate leaving just a lubricant behind, usually Graphite is used for most dry lubes.

(we had to use graphite powder for lube on our rifles and machine guns when we were in the Arctic doing Arctic warfare (Army). Regular "gun oil" was almost solid at those temps)
