Replacing the sensor strip is quite straight forward. You need to access the electrical connection via the interior access panels, much the same way you would access the tail light assembly to change a bulb. Once it is disconnected, as I recall, you just pry the strip out of the groove/mechanical seat where it is mounted--there are no fasteners beyond that. If you are doing a scan you should get a message something like "right rear lift gate obstruction sensor malfunction." You will try to close the lift gate, but it won't move. Basically the sensor strip is just a couple of wires in a rubber sleeve with a resistor at the end. Normally, the system sees the resistance of the circuit and concludes all is well. If one of the wires breaks, then you would get a malfunction as the system doesn't see the resistance and assumes the strip is broken. Alternatively, when these get old, the rubber breaks, and water gets inside, causing a short between the wires, looking like there is an obstruction.
