Wally, can you let us know if the below parts list posted upthread is correct? Did your dealer do this for you? Also no one has reported back on "diffuser removal" issue and whether they were successful. I would like to do this mod but have been waiting for some confirmation on what is needed in terms of parts/labor. Thank you for any help you can provide. It looks AWESOME!

Also, I found a "kit" for sale from eBay seller gonwalt that claims to have all the necessary parts. At $1400 it is not cheap, and the description says no returns so I want to be clear on the labor costs before pulling the trigger. If anyone has had this done or was able to DIY (bmre90, are you still out there?) and can provide approximate labor cost from the dealer that would be very helpful. Here is the eBay link for the kit:

I did it my self, I'm almost positive if you show up to a dealer asking for GL63 tips they will say something like.. "it's impossible" "we never heard about that" "Who toll you you can?" "oh it will be 16 hours labor since we need to remove the rear door, rear bumper, seats, air filter, oil filter, battery, hood and transmission in order to change the tips"
I use an old Matress Duvet to lay down, hard part was remove the lower balance since I didn't remove the bumper, I just follow the screw positions from the new lower balance, they are exactly in the same position from the old one, on each side is a small "nut" don't forget that. Remove tips and brackets first, I believe take me about 3-4 hours but I am not an expert. The lower balance is silver color, is not chrome since originally was designed for the GL63

update: I received the kit from eBay seller gonwalt on Thursday. I decided to try to do it myself. I got the stock tailpipes off in just a minute or two. The rear valence was the tricky part. I got a bunch of the screws off but couldn't get it to budge. Thanks to wally_AMG I was able to find the two nuts on the ends of the valence that hold the "pins" in at the very tips. Those were a bear to unscrew due to no clearance. I had to use a needle nose pliers to turn them little by little. With those off it came out easily. Sadly it looks like the kit was packed with the wrong brackets (they gave me the same brackets as the GL550 - the AMG tailpipes are wider) so I will have to wait until they get me the right parts to finish the job. I will post some pictures when all is complete.

Yes, I will try to post some basic instructions in pictures with the locations circled.. i think it would have been a pretty quick job if I had a template to work from (and the correct brackets to finish). It is not easy getting to some of those nuts though!

Wow interesting. Someone here posted the ml63 w166 tips are the same as the gl63 x166 tips. Sucks, but thanks for all the effort so far!

So after all it turns out that the tailpipes that I received WERE correct - the brackets that I received were the wrong brackets. The eBay seller gonwalt called me via telephone, got to the bottom of it immediately and sent me the correct parts priority overnight. I was very impressed with his customer service. I just finished the install last night. I will post better pictures, the correct parts list and as much of a DIY guide as possible soon. This was a pretty challenging DIY job. Some of the nuts were nearly impossible to access. It took a lot of time and patience but I am very happy with the results.

In case anyone is interested, I have a used (good condition) exhaust tip (right - A166 490 16 27) for $250 shipped, retail is $480 so save a few bucks.

Gents,
I have a question.
If your would change the muffler of the 550 with one of a 63. I had a look under both of them and they look the same.
Would you be able to get the sound of the 63 out of there, or does it have a different down pipe as well?
Thnx in advance.

No idea, but you could get a Supersprint or Brabus exhaust.

I am thinking of trading my truck in and wanted to see if anyone was interested in doing this same mod to their truck with the GL 63 Exhaust tips. I have had them on my truck for a couple of years and was going to convert it back to stock and sell the GL63 tips, brakets and lower cover piece if anyone in interested. all partes are OEM Mercedes. Will likley post them in the classified section this weekend. Let me know if anyone has any interest. Thanks
