I have had great success with getting my 2014 GL550's 360 camera software updated at the dealer under warranty. IT’S MUCH BETTER! I can now see fine when backing up in the dark.
They said the software update came out 12/9, not 12/1 as I heard from the OP. They said they didn’t have to do a road calibration as another poster mentioned.
Here’s what they put on the service report:
360 degree camera software fault 0070 90011 *** 54-0650, 0010, maintain on-board power supply. *** 54-1011, 0020, perform an initial diagnostic quick test. *** 54-0991, 0030, program 360 camera as per LI54.65-P-059114. 54-0992, 0010, code 360 camera control module. Road test.

Just bought my first MB. GL450 this week
Back up lights are so dim and the camera is poor at night.i will try to get this updated next week at dealer
My question is, are the side mirrors supposed to rotate down when reversing? My GX460 did this and it was a great feature for hills/my driveway.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Just keep the right mirror button active by pressing it. Then the right mirror will drop down in reverse and slowly return when you put it in drive. It is the same as the GX, but a bit more elegant.

Also, my wife's LX570's parking cameras come on each time she slows to a stop. Is there a way to activate the GL to do the same? Would be very nice to have the feature automatic when I'm trying to park (parallel)

Don't believe there is any way to do as you say. It does initiate reverse camera when going backwards and front camera when going forward. You can assign a hot key to the "star" buttons to initiate the cameras as noted in the manual. I use the hot key to make sure I parked between the lines, for example. You start the cameras and press down once on the big selector button (don't know it's name off the top of my head) and the overhead view comes on.

Here's my rearview camera after the 360 camera software update. Much better than it was. This is in the country, but my yard lights are quite bright.<br/>

I just had the software upgrade done - what a huge difference! It is now quite effective.
As well, there is a brightness option - did it exist prior to the upgrade? I didnt notice it before.

Had my GL in for regular service last Friday and had them apply the LI54.65-P-059114 camera/software update. Tonight was my first opportunity to test it in the dark. Without a doubt it truly improved the camera effectiveness. IMO worth the update and a trip to the dealer even if you're not already going in for another reason.

I have my car at the dealer for routine maintenance. I mentioned the software update about the backup camera. Oddly enough he said they have to order a part for the fix. Did anyone else have this issue? Fortunately I have a loaner because I took it in on Thursday and they won't have it ready until Monday.

I took my GL550 in three times until they fixed the camera, and indeed, on the first visit months ago, they replaced the camera control module, but that didn't fix the problem. Perhaps some GLs do need both the new module and the updated software for the fix.

just to reiterate what everyone said, the camera update is a HUGE difference! If you haven't done it yet, don't hesitate and get it done.

This camera issue is not mute point... Same with the dim backup lights...

I want to reiterate the HUGE difference this makes. I looked for this thread to see if anyone else had noticed it and find out more about what they did to fix it.
I had my GL550 in for service a couple of months ago and noticed the difference right away. I didn't realize they had applied an update but I mention this as a problem every time (like 3x) I take it in for service just to make a point, not thinking I'll ever see a solution.
The down side is I have had a couple incidents with the camera not working at all but after a day or two (before I can get it back in) it starts working again. I'll mention that at my next service.
I just LOVE this car. I thought I loved my X5 but it ALWAYS had problems.

Cincy8, I've had that happen a couple of times. What has happened in my case is that I put the car in reverse, the camera comes on for just an instant, and then the audio screen appears (which is where I leave COMAND most often). What I think happens is that I put the GL in reverse too quickly after starting, which gives the command to bring up the camera, but this quickly followed by a command to bring up audio, which overrides the preceding camera command. Just a guess, but I've never had it happen after waiting a second to reverse, and I can undo the mixup by putting it in park and then reverse.

Software Update for night performance of camera
Just wanted to share that our one major gripe with our GL450 has been resolved following our 15K service where LI54.65-P-059114 update was performed to address the terrible picture quality in the rear view camera at night per the document posted by cyberorth (Thanks!!!)
Had previously been in to the dealership earlier this year around February 2015 and asked if there was anything they could do to fix the terrible back up camera quality at night as I'd been in a newer GL that had a backup camera that actually worked at night!
They didn't find any software updates and the solution was to turn up the brightness on the screen. (doh!) Did some quick research and found cyberorth's post with the "fix" and wondering why the dealership wasn't able to.
Didn't have time to go back to the dealership till now and finally brought a printout of the "fix" to be taken care of along with Service B.
Moral of the story, do research here FIRST and bring solution to dealership instead of expecting dealership to be able to find the solution for you!!
Anyway, just bumping this post in case anyone else with an x166 GL with the 360 camera (option code 501) with a production date up to 10/2014 hasn't had a chance to get this problem resolved!
