Camera ineffective at night

ouch
Unfortunately, some highway genius decided to total my car (he cut me off, not realizing that the cars ahead of me slowed down, then caused a 3 car pileup ahead of me, I tried to brake and swerve but it was too late). I asked the salvage yard to take off the rear lights so I can install them on the new GLS I ordered, I will post pics when I have it.

I just bought a 2015 GL550 CPO and this problem drives me crazy. When I dropped off the suv for service, I got the 2017 gls450 as a loaner, and I am SO jealous at how clear the camera was on the 2017. The daytime image was so crisp and vivid compared to the boring and faded image my camera produces. So I ask the rep if there is anything that can be done. He suggests changing the actual camera hardware. Front cost is about $825 and rear for $875 I was tempted to fork the money to make the wife happy.
I just checked my prod date on the suv and it says 7/2014. I guess this means this update might fix this issue, I hope! Thanks for sharing this information. I will report back with results. As always, this forum has been beyond informative with this being my 4th MB and counting Thank you all!!

Did you bump up the brightness of the camera? It helps a bit. Mine was supposedly all the way down. When I brought it up to the dealer, they said they turned it up all the way. So I've no way to verify other than what they told me. It is a tricky setting to get to. It wasn't obvious to me initially that there's a separate brightness control just for the camera.

When you start the car and put it in Reverse, the 360 camera comes on. In the lower right corner is what looks like a little light bulb. Turn the Comand wheel clockwise to highlight it and then press the button. A slide will open up on the right side of the screen. Use the wheel to raise the brightness to 5....

Mentioned problem to the dealer, showed picture of black wall on my back up camera at night, gave tech the update ID just in 2 days to get a response "There are no updates available"

Oct 7 camera after updating and calibrating.
Sept 22 camera before updating and calibrating
I have had great success with getting my 2014 GL550's 360 camera software updated at the dealer under warranty. IT’S MUCH BETTER! I can now see fine when backing up in the dark.
They said the software update came out 12/9, not 12/1 as I heard from the OP. They said they didn’t have to do a road calibration as another poster mentioned.
Here’s what they put on the service report:
360 degree camera software fault 0070 90011 *** 54-0650, 0010, maintain on-board power supply. *** 54-1011, 0020, perform an initial diagnostic quick test. *** 54-0991, 0030, program 360 camera as per LI54.65-P-059114. 54-0992, 0010, code 360 camera control module. Road test.

Stock camera is crap in dark environments. That’s one of my pet peeves.
Fortunately that got fixed on the GLS models. I have a thread on the GLS forums, and several have confirmed this.

2014 GL550's rear camera is CRAP. I have a 2006 Odyssey and its rear camera will put shame to MB rear camera, image is blurry and safety is compromised. Not quite sure why MB dropped the ball on this one, hope the update will fix the problem. SHAME MB.

They did. GLS' have a different camera which should be in line with the other MB models 2017 and newer. I have had little GLC and GLA loaners and their cameras are like viewing an HD TV.

A difference of night and day!
Hello all, just got my hands on a cpo 2015 gl. After the first night of having the vehicle my wife complained about the rear view camera (didn’t take her long) when backing into the garage. After reading this post, I brought the gl to the dealership and a day later I was told the camera was functioning properly...nope! I asked what was done and the service advisor said general settings where adjusted and there was nothing left to do. Which in turn I replied that this was a know issue and the software update in their system (info provided by CYBERORTH) would fix the issue. The service advisor *scratches head* and replies “ok, if you found it we can too”. Next day, problem solved! Thanks to this awesome community and it’s eager to teach members.

Anyone know if the camera can be "upgraded" with another after market camera? Can it be replaced with a cheap new camera, but better at night? Is it a standard SVCC signal / RCA connector or similar?
Thanks
