Favourite features / nice things hard to find

Well, our GL is 500 miles old now and we keep finding additional features which often entails something happening and the wife reading the book as we work it all out!

So I thought I'd try and pick everyone's brains in a thread and see if I can find out more stuff without finding it by accident!

The one we found yesterday, which wasn't obvious, was the hill hold function using the brake pedal. If you come gently to a stop and then push quickly down on the brake, the blue P in the top of the display becomes the word HOLD and the brakes stay on so you can take your foot of the brake and the car won't creep forward - it's documented in the manual but I hadn't got that far.

I love the pull and hold on the downshift paddle for overtakes.

I also love the mute button for the radio (which then stays muted through a restart of the vehicle - Audi's don't do that!!).

Lingatronic "Search for music" is great when you've got lots of tracks, I've always wanted to say "Bat out of hell" to my car!

Learning every time we drive the truck - and loving it too!

Cheers

Jon

I love discovering all the features of my new GL550, but reading the manual I have to wade through paragraph upon paragraph of identical safety and cover-your-butt warnings about how driving is dangerous. I wish there were a bullet-point guide to all the GL's features without all the legal excess! The manual would be 80% smaller if they'd just put all the disclaimers at the beginning of the manual.

I agree on the manual….an awful lot of repetition ….. toyota does the same. One of my favorite features is the "wind gust stabilization program" You really don't know that its working until you realize "i should be getting blasted from one side or the other" and you then realize you are only getting slightly nudged!!! It really does work!

I'll give this a try next time I'm out. Meanwhile, what happens when you pull and hold the downshift paddle?

When you pull and hold the downshift paddle the car keeps shifting down until it gets to the best gear for acceleration - which is also the best gear for engine braking - according to the manual.

This means you can get ready for an overtake and just boot it when the coast is clear and not have to suffer a kick down delay - one of my least favourite things.

If you keep hold of the paddle it doesn't shift back into D (which it does after a few seconds normally after using the paddles).

If you then pull and hold the upshift paddle it will revert to D for you.

Clever stuff

does anybody know about the feature when you have a school bus in front of you or any other truck the emitting toxic fumes in your face, you push and hold the cabin recirculation button until all the windows close. then after you pass the vehicle or it moves you push the button again and all windows go back to the same position they were in before.

I don't see the online manual for the "Voice Control System" manual that came with my GL550. Does anyone have that link?

Where is the REST button in the GL? My old S class had it, but I haven't seen it on the newer MB cars.

I don't think it exists on the X166. It's not on mine, haven't heard of anyone having it.

I love the push and hold the air circulation button trick - thanks for that.

Sadly, the REST function depends on which version of climate control you have, I've definitely got it used it several times now, very very nice feature.

Do you have 3rd zone climate control then?

I have the 3-zone and no REST. I think I saw it on the Canadian layout in the manual.

This of course works as you described in the 63 if you are in the M mode. In other modes a kick down is a more efficient way if you truly kick it.
