Options opinions

Hi all,

I have read through a lot of old threads to get a feel for options and am still on the fence on the EZ Entry (sounds like the pin solution is OK). My kids are 11/11/7 so they are right in the zone where this has been an issue.

I have a GL 550 on order with the following options:
Iridium Silver Metallic (775)
• Standard Paint (-PAINT)
• Black, Leather Upholstery (201)
• Special Order Option Charge (SPC)
• Active Curve System (468)
• Heated Windshield Washer Reservoir (875)
• Heated Steering Wheel (443)
• Rear Side Airbags (293)
• Lockable Rear Storage Compartment (888)
• Trailer Hitch (550)
• Heated Rear Seats (872)
• Rear Seat Entertainment (864)
• Power Easy Entry (843)
• On/Off-Road Package (430)

I was hoping to get some opinions from experienced owners on the build. Is there an obvious delete? Did I miss a must have?

Thanks for any input.

Lighting package and 360 camera, black headliner (usually free) and lower wrapped dash not sure which option group they fall under in the U.S

P.S I would delete rear entertainment and buy 2 iPad Air's for a lower price. the screens are quite bulky. With the Ipads there is a million things you can do while with the entertainment system you can only do one thing.

Panoramic roof if you want the 3rd row side windows to open.
Distronic is my favorite! Don't have to use brake or gas in traffic.
Active curve is a waste unless you're really taking lots of turns at moderate speeds.
Some people says the 360 camera is awesome so I ordered it especially with little kids that could get run over.
My kids like the 3rd row heating/cooling so that was a good choice

Active Curve is not just for cornering, it smooths the ride in uneven payment in a straight line, i.e broken pavement, pot holes etc. Think of it as the old generation of the Magic Body Control. If it was offered in Canada I would have paid for it.

Here is what another member posted about the sytem.

My amg sport pack ML handles in sport mode axactly as MB says the active curve system does. ie. flat cornering, indiscernable sway or, body roll if you wish.
What the active curve system does is to "disconnect" or decouple the sway bar when in straight line driving or off road (raised suspension)mode.
The advantage this gives on a straight road is a better more comfortable ride by allowing the suspension on one side to move independantly to the other.....independant suspension..... Get it ?
The dissadvantage of independant suspension is body roll on corners. Hence, anti sway/roll bars connecting the suspension side to side to fascilitate flat cornering.

The advantage of decoupling when off road or with raised suspension setting is better wheel / suspension travel on undulating surfaces. ie. allowing one wheel to to go up over a big rock or down a hole.
Just think what would happen if you have a strong anti roll bar and one wheel entered a deep hole. If the body was stiff enough and the anti roll bar strong enough, the wheel presented with a hole would be held up off the ground and you would then have a 3 wheel drive. I hope you are getting the picture.

Summary...
Standard anti sway bar is always "on"
Active curve anti sway bar is ON when cornering.
Active curve anti sway bar is OFF when driving straight and in off road mode.

There is a variable aspect to the system between on and off which is achieved thru the hydraulics that do the coupling, but the basics for understanding, are "on or off".

Consider the default setting as ON.
What you pay for with active curve is to turn the anti sway bar OFF.

I think the lighting package is standard on 550 so you have it already.

I debated about the power easy entry - I haven't made up my mind completely but am thinking of not getting it - it provides minimum added assistance but may potentially be an issue and I don't think the pin solution makes sense from a safety perspective.

A gaggle of MB's
Very nice GL550... great choices on the suspension Off/ActiveCurve...awesome actually

1) Add MB-Tex lower dashboard (U09)

Test fit 2nd row headrests with your posse.. for which style headrests are most comfortable..the fact is if you don't have EZ-Entry you won't miss it - as long as 2nd row passengers are comfortable.

Rear entertainment makes sense for some of my customers as a "punishment" - "if you kids don't straightne up we will take the games/iGear away and you will HAVE to watch a MOVIE"

Keep the beat !

Another special order option is the 2nd row pass-through. It is NOT compatible with power easy entry. This lets you pass skis through the center of the 2nd row. The code is "282" 2nd Seat Row Pass Thru $160. I also got the Lower Wrapped Dash and it is well worth it.

Thanks for the input.

I have not found pictures of the wrapped dash side by side with a standard (MB-Tex lower dashboard). Do any of you know where I can find some comparison pictures?

I absolutely don't want pano roof, but does anyone know where photos of the black headliner can be found? With the black interior selected, what color would it be if I didn't change it?

I agree with Fab….if you don't have easy entry you won't miss it! Rear entertainment in packages in vehicles will soon be history because of the portable tech available……even read an article saying that have that stuff no longer adds any trade value to the car because the tech is so outdated. Stick with iPads or tablets or whatever!

I am one of the few on the forum that have the on/off road package and I love it! Provides benefits ( as it says ) on and off road! The ON part will allow you to select a very functional "sport" mode …. changing the suspension AND throttle response & shift points! The OFF function is a big help if you need to travel less than nice winter or rural roads!

The light package is a MUST…. so much difference!

In Canada you can now get the black Designo roof liner ( $0 charge) as a sole option which was not available in 2013. I highly recommend this if available State side.

Phto's/schmoto's on lower wrapped dash... for $300 on your deluxe rig you need to take the small stuff on faith brother-man.. and poo-poo on your dealer for not catching that already..

So I emailed the dealer to add this. He got a message back that he sent me a screen shot of that said "U09 ALLOC IS FULL IN DECADE 14/03-3. PLEASE TRY ANOTHER PO FROM A DIFFERENT DECADE".

I assume this means that their supply is already used up for that build period. Looks like I will not be getting this option.

In high speed cornering, even if the tall SUV is flat, your body leans unless it raises one side higher. This is physics.

But in moderate speed of cornering, the flat cornering is fantastic. and in straight the anti-roll bar is disconnected. We love the ACS. We feel more confident and safe for this heavey and tall SUV.
