Just ordered GL350 BT. Now having second thoughts.

Either way, Renntech does have the updated tune for the W166 which uses the same engine as the GL. They Gain 20 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque for $1,295. This is exactly what Kleeman gains too.

I would be very skeptical of the other company that is gaining 60+ Hp and 118 lb-ft of torque for $349 when the others are gaining a fraction of that power. I would want to see an independent dyno before I would trust the claims.

240 HP / 455 LB-FT
Gains:

260 HP / 485 LB-FT
Price: $1,295
Apologies, I meant to say x164, not x166- I corrected it.

Eurotuner did a full test of the boxes on a BMW:

Again, just to clear the confusion. You are quoting a page on the Renntech site that is for the pre-2013 GL. The pre-2013 GL coded 164 is not the same engine design and has much less stock hp and torque than the new 2013. So, your numbers are all wrong for the final tune hp and torque.

The 2013, coded 166 starts out with 455 kb-ft.

Renntech has no ECU for the new 2013-2014 engine at this time. They can not unlock the ECU at this time.

Other tunners have ECU tuner kits that claim about 20% increase in HP and Torque. Also, there is a mod to decrease the peddle delay when you floor-it off the line.

Click on the damn link for Renntech I posted. I will post it again below. You will see it is for the 166 model diesel engine. it takes power from 240 hp stock to 260 hp and torque from 455 lb-ft to 485 lb-ft. They have not updated their page for the GL but the ML166 uses the same engine. Renntech is always the first with ECU tunes. The owner of Renntech, Hartmut Feyhl, worked with AMG for 12 years before starting his own company. He has very good connections. http://www.renntechmercedes.com/www/node/969

The X166 GL350 makes 240 HP stock and 455 lb-ft of torque stock.

Well, it looks like a renntech is having trouble with the new engine's ECU since other tuners have done substantially better...

Renntech and Kleeman are the two most respected Mercedes tuners in the World. Why would they grossly overstate HP gains and ruin their reputation or tune a car to the point it will damage the engine. There are MB dealers who install Renntech products. Show me another dealer who does that with any other products or who will warranty their tunes other than Kleeman.

My experience with Renntech is that they deliver at or greater than their claims and have a spotless reputation. I can't say that about most other tuners. They traditionally grossly overstate horsepower gains and do not stand by their products when there is a failure.

When I had my ECU and TCU tuned by Renntech on my bi turbo V12, the car would not go in gear. They overnighted a new TCU at their cost. Not only did they cover a brand new TCU but they also covered the shipping. Turns out that I bent one of the prongs reinserting the TCU. I told them it was my fault. They did not ask for a penny more or even that I send the new TCU back to them.

Renntech touted gains of 125 crank HP over stock. My car produced over 125 rwhp over stock. If you know about dynos and HP gains, you know that 125 rwhp is much greater than 125 crank HP. I was a very happy camper with their results and their customer service.

That's great! Too bad Renntech is having trouble with the X166...

Pretty solid advice……. On another note completely: They let you drive a sold vehicle that had not been picked up yet??? I bought a new 2011 GL and was not able to pick it up for a week…..if my dealer had let someone take it out on a test drive I would have been highly agitated!

Sorry, you are simply wrong. I have spoken with Renntech twice and they do not have a tune for the 166. I asked about your link and Renntech told me that they had no ECU yet for the 2013-2014 GL350. So, you can quote site links all you want, but they simply are wrong.

Here is one of the emails directly from Renntech:

The later model 2013’s have a new generation ECU that we at this time can not unlock we are working on it. Possibly if you can remove your ECU take a picture of the top and bottom of it I can tell you if it can be done.
Thanks

As far as other tuners, they do seem to have kits that get torque near 600 lb ft. These numbers make the GL350 quite a great tow vehicle and combined with the milage of the Blutech engine, make the GL350 (for me) the choice for towing, not the full blown 450 or 550. That's all.
