Auto High Beams

Hi all. I have noticed that my 2015 GL350 automatic high beams seem to not work very well. Sometimes they will not recognize that the red lights in front of me are a car and it leaves the brights on. Also sometimes it will not recognize that the 2 headlights coming toward me in the other lane are a car and again it leaves the brights on. And sometimes it works fine. I had this system in a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it worked much better. Has anybody else had issues? Was the dealer able to replicate/fix?

Mine works pretty well, if anything it has the opposite problem of being too sensitive and sometimes not turning the high beams on even with no cars around.

Same problem here... I tend to have to switch the light over and use them manually... Especially on country roads.

Mine dim too much as well. They aren't very effective on dark country roads, dim when it sees a good reflection from a road sign, dim if you slow down for a deer crossing the road, etc.

Now if we could only aim the right light up off the road for a deer spotter (a.k.a. Coon light)..... Being from KY originally and already hitting a deer at 700 miles on my 2014.... I could almost seriously consider!!!

Mine are way sensitive. The other night the moon kept the brights from illuminating.

Brights also seem to not activate at low speed. Anyone else experience this?

The only issue I have with mine is the "back country roads thing"....they don't shift to high on slow twisty back country roads....I have to bring the high's on manually. That's a programmed speed issue.....

I have not had my GL long enough to know if the auto high beam is exactly the same as the E class, but there is a tradeoff between active illumination and auto high beam. Because the lights turn at lower speeds along with steering, the auto high beams cannot turn on because the camera cannot see where the beams are aiming to prevent them from blinding other drivers.

I had mine on a two hour drive on high speed country backroads that had posted speeds of 50-55 and the lights worked close to flawlessly. A handful of signs caused the lights to dim briefly but it was rare. Remember that the lights are also programmed to dim if there is street lighting.

You can turn them off completely via the center console. But most of us just turn the headlights to 'on/1' instead of 'auto' and then they will stay on when the stick is pushed forward and not go off until you pull the stick back.

To use the manual high beams, just turn the light switch one notch clockwise from "auto" manual high-low beam headlight mode and depress the washer control to get high beam. This also gives you an automatic beam with the automatic lights when you go back to the "auto" position. The light switch is just to the left of the steering column on the dash.
