A gaggle of MB's
Well.... let's get something straightened out here... your GL comes with free "annual updates" for three years ... meaning 1 yr from date of service you qualify for one N/C update .. which at that time will be your choice either mBrace downloadable (if you have mbrace) or dealer order DVD if you do not have mbrace.. again, either part "starts" after 365 days in service... ALL MB salesmen should know that - and if they don't then they are not up to snuff..

Fab, is this how us 2013 GL350 people would update our nav too? (at a price of course).

Upgrade work for the mBrace nav update is not completed yet... since it was originally started to backup the "3 yr" annual update thing for 2015's..

Actually that it is not entirely correct...
The updates are provided by HERE(the company that compiles the map data for MB) via USB to the dealer every 6 months. These USB are masters and stay with the dealer much like a telematics SW flash CD. Depending on dealer size/volume they will be provided anywhere from 1-5 USB's.

All NTG 4.5_GEN3, NTG5*2, and NTG5*1(telematics system in 2016 w/x166) will be provided only via USB and these USB's as of now will not be available for purchase. There were plans to do some "lite" updating via mbrace, but it is likely we won't see that until the next generation when we switch from mbrace to mbConnect.

When your vehicle is in for service you can request the update at no cost to you. Once again as of MY15 and newer, excluding SLS as that still uses NTG4.0 which does not support the USB update.

All NTG5 systems also perform update much quicker as those systems don't rewrite the whole database, but only add the changes.
