Distronic question

If distronic/cruise control is set to, say, 70 mph, and a car in front is going slower, what is the method by which the car maintains the slower speed? Is it braking, or is it less fuel supply? I ask, because if is braking, then we are prematurely wearing our brakes (pads/rotors), no?

Cuts engine first then applies brakes if needed.

Yes....however, the application of the brakes is almost immediate in most cases.

Not in my car. Only if the vehicle is braking in front or going substantially slower does it apply the brake. If the car in front is cruising at 70 and you are set at 75 it will register the vehicle and move to the preset following distance and follow the car. Only if there is a large gap in speed will it need to brake.

That's been my experience too. Only if the car is going much slower in front of you when you approach it or if you merge close behind someone while having the following distance set to a longer distance will the car brake. Mine is incredibly smooth on the freeway and a little less so in stop and go traffic.

Curious how you can tell - the sensation that I feel is that the vehicle is being "held back" - which I associated with braking.

Look at what your fuel consumption guage is telling you and/or look out back through your rear view mirrors when using it at night for your brake lights.

Mine was the same.....however, there were times when I honestly forgot the system was engaged and got into slower traffic situations where it was "speed up" and then "slow down" ( vehicle in front hitting the brakes ) ....in those situations it is indeed using the brakes. The brakes are also used in the "lane correction system".....so in response to the OP's original question....it is quite possible that you will find greater wear on the brakes than if your vehicle did not have these systems.

it is definitely both less accelerator and brakes depending upon situations. I have seen it be so smooth I get behind someone going 10 mph less than I want to travel and get mad at distronic for being so gentle.

If the distronic distance is set farther away, then the vehicle will feel smoother when coming upon a slower moving vehicle. It's definitely a safety feature that I will not live without!!
