Accommodations for dogs
Hi everyone.
I replaced my 2007 GL450 and am picking up my 2016 Palladium Silver GL450 this morning from the dealer. I was glad to see that the option code #858 Power Quarter Windows was on my bill sheet. When I was originally looking at the GL a month ago, this option was not available from the ones that were on the dealer's lot and was told that MB got rid of it. I am so happy they brought it back. I always liked the option of cracking the rear quarter window for my dog.
The other thing I noticed is that the 2016 does not have the mounting holes in the headliner for the cargo net divider that I used so much in my 2007. What are other owners doing to create a divider between the second and folded third row?
Thanks.

I was afraid of that.
What kind of cargo tray did you purchase for your dog? I would like to protect the 3rd row arm rests from her paws. Any suggestions?
It would be nice if the tray would cover the arm rest.

I use the MB cargo tray:

I don't know of any option that will protect the armrests. There is one from canvasback.com, but it leaves the top of the armrests open: http://www.canvasback.com/index.php/...2007-2012.html
That said, after a year of use, there's no damage on the armrests from my dog (he's a 90lbs Rhodesian ridgeback). Don't think he ever steps on it

Thanks mtm. Nice dog! Do you do anything to restrain him while driving?
I will definitely pick up the cargo tray along with some all weather mats. I figure I will extend the head rests as a divider if needed. I don't want to install the after market divider bars unless it looked OEM.
My 2007 didn't have climate control in the rear so I think she'll love riding in the rear of the 2016.

A completely different direction. I've got a 60 lb hound and a 45 lb hound. They both fit in a Variocage like this one
I think it's the size I have. They have lots of styles available. You'll have to hunt around available stock.
It is designed to be quiet. My girls chew stuff, so I have to keep them confined.

Ford Lightning, GL350 and a couple of outbacks
We have a 100 pound Bernese Mt Dog, and went with a car specific dog crate as well. Shopped the variocage and this one and went with this one instead. Fits inside our 5 series wagon as well so we move it back and forth. Plus the dog can't jump out when you open the back or during the closing of the back hatch.

I'll put some pics up later this morning, but for now here's the US distributor website with a lot more info and pictures. We just finished a 3 year assignment with the military in Germany and everyone in Europe either had this style of crate or a custom fitted aluminum frame built into the car for dog transport. I was stunned to see that MB doesn't offer a custom solution. Saab and Volvo both had/have amazing built-in dog solutions for the cargo area of the suv/wagon http://www.4pets-products.com/#!4pets-proline-en/c19f9

Here's the condor large in the back of our GL350. We strap it through the latch anchor points on the back of the seats. The mat is the color matching weather tech mat and the black thing is the fold-out load sil protector

This is a close up of the back inside corner of the box. You thread the strap through the slot on each side so it anchors the box against the back seat. The box isn't cubical, it's slanted like a flat pyramid so it fits snugly right against the back seats.

we have not yet been in a long road trip with the dog in the GL. He's been in the crate in the wagon for 90 minute trips or so and has been fine. We got the third zone AC with the extra vents in the back just for the dog in the GL. Our first Berner drove across country many times with us during moves, this time both the GL and the dog have only been with us for about 6 months.

Best setup I have seen yet. Thanks for sharing KF93. How does it do with containing flying fur?
I checked out the website and was wondering if you tried any of their accessories such as the dog ramp.
I noticed that you bought the large and still have room for a larger crate. Are you happy with the size? It would be helpful if you could post a photo of the crate with your dog if possible. Thanks.

will get a picture with the dog this evening. Much less fur than with the other options, most is contained in the crate. We didn't get the ramp, we have a first generation twistep from about 12 years ago we bought with our first dog and our old MDX. It's also useful for reaching the car top box. http://www.twistep.com/

Roadtripped across the country last fall (Ohio to San Diego to NC) in our GL 350. Our 70 lb. golden doodle rides the back seat (covered with old carped remnants). This breed does not shed so fur is not a problem. We do not secure him which is a subject of much debate.
